Choosing the right carb.

I have a 1984 Mercury Cougar, that I have installed a 1986 5.8 H.O motor in, that I got from a Ford Econoline. The engine is stock, with the exception of that I have removed the AIR system, the EGR valve and the catalytic converter
The original carburetor on this engine is a Holley 4180, a carburetor that was special made for Ford engines (Ford part number: E5TE-9510-ZB), as far as I know these carburetors are 575 cfm. My carburetor is over 20 years old now, and doesn't work properly, especially in the range where the engine is not completely warmed up.
That's why I want to replace my old worn out carburetor, with a new one from Holley, but I'm not sure wich carburetor to choose. That's why I am asking you, wich carburetor do you recommend? A carburetor with adjustable float and electric choke, is desired.

As for your question it depends on how much money you wana drop on this. A street avenger is a great street carb and is my choice when I get money saved up. However right now I have a 0-1850 in my car. A 600 CFM 4160 series with vac secondarys and manual choke. You could probaly get away with a 4776 4150 double pumper too but you would more then likely be drowning the motor in gas. It comes down to how you want to use the car.

I was thinking to spend about 300 $, on a new carb. My car is at this point my daily driver, but I'm gonna keep her for years too come, so I want it to work properly. BTW electric choke is a "must".

If you really wana stay Holley I would suggest This, A 4160, E choke 600 with the ford auto kickdown. Summit Price is $279.99

Thanks alot for your help. I live in Norway, the far away country on outline of the scandinavian peninsula.
Buying parts from the USA is no problem, I have done that several times before.
There's just one thing, the carb you refered is a so called, non-adjustable needle and seat float. But I'm the kind of guy that likes to adjust everything myselfe, or at least have the uppertunity. BTW there is two carbs of the type I linked too. There is the one I linked too, with Part #: 0-804523, and there is one with Part #: 0-80452. These two carbs seems to be indentical, but the one I linked too costs 309.95, and the other one costs 329.95. Why? Are there any difference?

From what I know, just that you can adjust on one carb, can't on the other. As for pricing, I duno. I'm one of the few carb guys on here and I'm learning as I go. I hope that I helped you out at all.

I am in the learning phase myselves when it comes too carbs, so I really appreciate your help. The carb you linked to, is that the same as the one you have on you car, with exception of the choke? Is that carb just plug and play? What about performance, how do you feel it performes? That's some more questions from the rookie, to the experts.
By the way, did you know that the Fox Cougars and T-birds, are really rare in Norway? I wouldn't be surprised if there's less than 20 Fox Cougars in Norway.

If so I dunno what the difference is, the picture is even identical... Possibly they are just going to increase the price when the next catalog  comes out... As already suggested call them...

As long as the throttle shafts are not worn badly, I'd think the original could be rebuilt... I'm still running the orig Holly carb on my Fairlane that was made in '68...

I've messed with carbs a bit, in racing, and you have some good advice. I would try to get your's rebuilt, but if (for whatever reason) this is not what you want, then I'm sure Holley makes a 600cfm vac sec with electric choke and everything adjustable.
Now if you need something for Nextel Cup or Trans-Am, call me.

Hi again, and thanks for all good advice. I think I will buy a new carb, instead of rebuilding the one I have, I think I will save me some truble that way, you never know what can go wrong.
The carb that is most interesting know is this Holley carb http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HLY%2D0%2D80453&N=700+400178+300737+115&autoview=sku . Do you think that would be the right choice?
Another thing is that, I have studied the photo of the carb a bit, and I don't seem to find out were I am supposed to connect the throttle cable. On the carb I have now, there is a ball on the throttle lever, that the throttle cable clips on too, but on the photo of the new carb there doesn't seem to be anything like that.

You'll either have to remove the one from your present carb(prob bradded?), or find one that has a stud and bolts down...

In that case you won't actually need a Ford specific carb, as the ones they are referring to have a hookup for the 70s style C4/C6 kickdown... You can see it as the lever between the regular throttle lever and the carb main body... Those kickdowns attach to the stud directly behind the large hole in the throttle lever...

I found a solution on the throttle cable problem. I found these http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HLY%2D20%2D2&N=700+0&autoview=sku and they will do the job for me. When it comes to the transmission kickdown hookup, it seems to be correct, because my -84 Cougar originally had the 3.8 V6, and when I installed the 5.8 I just used the original C5 tranny. As far as I  know the C5 is identical with the C4 on the outside, so it should be correct. So if anybody want's to do a swap from a 3.8 to V8, the C5 works fine, but take precautions, be gentle with it, and install an extra transmission oil cooler, than it will last longer. I have had my car with V8 and C5 for nearly a year now, and still works perfectly.
