Will this work?

What have you guys and gals used to install radios? My 86 came with a gaping hole and this is the closest thing I could find. As the title says will it work? Other sugestions on where and what to buy? otherwise the next thing is going to be a post in the want section for an old stock radio.

i wouldnt use the mustang specific kit. most car audio places sell the plastic material for custom installs. i paid about $20 for a 12"x12" sheet a few years ago.

That kit will not work.  Go to WalMart and look for the kit that actually says thunderbird/cougar... If I recall it didn't say all the years it would actually fit but if you find one that says it will fit a 1st gen ranger then get that one.  I pulled my head unit out of my 87 ranger and bolted/plugged it strait into my 88 cougar.

Most of the ones I've seen at wally world are the universal type. They come with all the stuff to make them fit just about any ford and many other cars/trucks. Oh and sorry I didn't use a mustang kit I got mine from Radio Shack Said it fit my 84 bird.

Alrighty then. I guess its time to hit walmart then. I was just looking for a cheap kit. I looked at the ones at the local autozone and they get $18 for the Ford "universal" install kit then another $16 for the wiring harness. I figured I could do better than that even after figuring in shipping. Guess I'll just have to lay it out.  Thanks guys.

yeh for sure, the universal ford kit works.  its got all the holes and tabs  that would be needed for any ford.  when you install make sure to sauder the harness, the only problem i had was for some reason the stock wiring for the speakers didnt work.  followed all the instructions and had tips from here, and in the end, i had to run about 24 feet of wire for the back and the front (i dont have the dash mounted sperkers)  the rear speakers were the worst at first i thought, then when i had to run the wires for the door speakers (through the boots) that WAS the worst.  coat hangered them in there.

It takes a bit of work to get it to really fit in there (or did for me)

I used the universal ford kit, ended up tpuppies one of the brackets a bit and flipping it over to get the CD player to fit right, and sanded the back of the console stack cover for clearance. It's not perfect (the front of the CD player pushes the cover out slightly) but overall it fits nicely and looks pretty good.

BTW if you have premium sound make sure you follow the faq on turbotbird.com.

I had totally forgotten but I no longer use the plastic kit.  I made some L brackets and used one of the rear supports from a stock radio...  Much better and when you push a button on the radio you can't feel it flex..

i used the universal kit and other than the computer type bracket that came with the radio being sort of tweeked, pushing buttons dont feel flimsy although i use my remote 99% of the time.  as for the fit, even with the ring that goes around the unit that came with the unit, the trim fits very well.  even with a few missing screws.  i got a kenwood, maybe it fits better?

Thanks for the info all. I picked up the kit and harness. Then found out that one of the harnesses in the dash had been cut so Im waiting for a reverse harness to come in before I hook it up. I will let you know when all is done.

I had to use one of those to fix my 88's harness,  they don't have stock wire colors on them.  They have the acme radio colors so you will still have to find out what wires in your dash do what.
