EGR Vacuum Solenoid?

Can someone point me in the right direction. I pulled the codes and EGR vacuum solenoid needs replacing. But I don't know where this part is located. So I went and bought a replacement EGR vacuum solenoid and I had hoped that once I saw it I could find it, but I still don't know where it is. Also does anyone know if this is the right part?

if i remember correctly, it should be under/behind your coolant resivoir

Pass side lower front fender apr0n,The vac line goes into the charcol canister(big black box attached to frame rail near rad.

It is under the coolent resivoir. But I don't have the right part. The one I need it like $120. Also I am getting some ignition surging. I know that either the IAC or TPS is most likely the problem but I have no idea what they look like. If someone has a picture of the IAC or TPS it would help alot.

i dont have a picture on hand, but if youre facing the engine from the front of the car, the TPS is on the left side of the CFI, has 3 wires coming off of it

the IAC is toward the right side of the CFI, the cylindrical thing hanging off the side of it, that the throttle linkage/lever rests on

Before you run out and start throwing parts at the car, what was the actual EGR solenoid code? Remember, the codes don't always mean "replace this part", but rather "this part MAY be the problem, but it's bad behavoir could be caused by something else".

Either way, the TPS is on the passenger side. The throttle shaft goes through it:

The EGR Vacuum solenoid code is 84.  According to fordfuelinjection.com it says: EGR vacuum solenoid circuit failure. If someone knows what that means then by all means please tell me. :ies: I thought it ment that it was bad. And thank you for the picture.

On my '86 5.0 this is the EGR vacuum solenoid.  I hope this helps.

Ok I figured I would put this under my thread instead of jacking the one about the IAC. After reading about the IAC thread and the other one about the IAC, the way to test it is to have the car idling and unplug the IAC. Correct? So anyway I have my car idling and then I unplug the IAC and the rpm's didn't change. They sayed right at about 850. Does this mean that the IAC is bad? Also I checked the tps and it reads 1.004 volts. Do you guys think that is close enough or should I take it down a peg? :ies:

Well at first glance that means its bad.. but you should check the plug for correct voltage.  Your wires could be cut or broken somewere, then there are all those fusible links......

you were saying that you think your EGR is causing your funky idle? i think i saw that in another thread somewhere

something you can do, is pull the vacume line off of the EGR valve, and plug the line, and see how it acts

as for your IAC and TPS, it sounds like its good to me, 1.004, see if you can loosen the 2 screws holding it, and move it at all, if you can get the voltage just below 1v, youd be set on that

On the 87/88 5.0's that picture seanef26 showed is the TAD/TAB solenoids, but the EGR solenoid (on XR7's and LS's) looks just like it, only it is a single unit instead of the double as shown in the picture.

To test (any of these):  Apply 12 V to the solenoid terminals (after removing the harness connector) and then you should be able to blow air thru the two vacuum terminals.

On the one I had, grease & dirt had gotten into the mechanism over the years, so I poured rubbing alcohol into all its crevices and kept applying the 12V and suddenly it started clicking after the sediment dislodged.  Then blowing air thru the terminals could be switched on and off by applying the 12V.

The picture lowcat had is of the part that's used for the gas canister purge solenoid on the 87/88's LS and XR7's.  It can be tested and cleaned in the same way.  I don't think the canister purge solenoid part causes any codes or engine issues if it fails though.

And like other said, it may not be the solenoid itself.  If you suck in on the vacuum hose going to the EGR itself you should be able to kill the engine, a rough test of the EGR itself, but it still may be leaking due to carbon buildup, so you could pull it to clean/check it as well.

Ok I checked all the solenoids and I found the bad one. I had 2 choices. Either go by a new one from a parts store at about $120 or go find one in a junkyard. Naturally, I went to the junkyard. $20 later and my egr vacuum solenoid is no longer a problem.
