Stupid Cars (Part II)

Sooooo,
After 5 days in Bellingham helping John deal with his g/f (car accident, coma, she's OK) and stripping my 87 TC that washiznit by the 18 wheeler, I decided to go home. Sure I did...
The Nissan was loaded down with all of the parts from the 87 and running perfect (as usual) and I got off of the exit in Seattle for my g/f's sister to visit real quick. I get a mile from their house and BOOOOOOM!!! The transmission goes out. The clutch is completely fried and the tranny is leaking gear lube. Great, John's towstrapping me the other 150 miles home tomorrow (with the GTO no less) and I get to pull the 4WD and trans and replace a clutch and probably an input shaft. With my luck the whole trans is done for.

I really, really hope Layla doesn't break while the truck is down!!! :(

Tranny problems aren't uncommon in those Nissan 5-speeds. It was the only area I had problems in my 500k-mile '90 Hardbody. The bearing on the countershaft fails for some reason.

$177 for a RAM clutch from Summit. We are going to attempt the tow in a few hours. Luckily the engine runs and I can keep the trans in neutral so I'll have power steering and brakes.

Anybody ever seen a 05 GTO tow a pickup? :hick:

I'd keep the transfer case in neutral if I were you. If things are chewed up inside the tranny you could be asking for trouble trying to tow it

Made it home in FOURTH GEAR! I think the trans is shot. The GTO tows really well (400HP/400TQ and designed for a hitch from the factory). We towed the truck to the highway, then I drove it 150+ miles, then towed it from the exit to the house.  The underside is coated in gear oil :(

Looks like the cluster went out (1/2/3/R) and the pieces took out 5th (OD) so 1:1 (4) was all that was left. I'll be pulling the trans tomorrow. :(

And yes, the T-case is still good and I kept it in neutral when we towed.

That would be the countershaft bearing I talked about. I drove mine home under its own power in fourth gear once when that bearing failed - including starting off from dead stops many times. It was hard on the clutch, but with 250k on it, it was due for replacing anyway :hick: Every gear except fourth passes power through the countershaft.

If you do need to replace the tranny (and it sounds like you do)
let the record show that pre-87 transmissions will work - at least they will on a 2WD truck. I tried like hell to find one from a hardbody (87-newer) and finally gave up, then took a chance on a $50 '85 tranny. It fit like a glove. Unfortunately the second gear synchro was shot, but I still put another 150k miles on it like that. Shifting from first to second involved pushing in the clutch, pulling the shifter out of gear, letting off on the clutch, pushing it again, then shifting into second :hick: Downshifting from 3rd to second was not an option

Shoot! Guess I'll start looking for a trans :(

I'm hoping I can rebuild it, but you never know.

And daboss, the 96 Hardbody is 40% puppiesanese, 60% US. That's more US content then a 2008 F150 built in Mexico.

But yeah, it might be selling time. :(
