autoX/road racing BS thread

i dont see alot of fox brids or cats that are built for autoX or road racing, nor many thread here about them. so if you got one, or race one, lets get some chat goin. pics, stories, triumps, failures, what have you.

my car is purpose built for track time, yet not a race car, and will serve as a summer DD and weekend cruiser as well.

there are many threads on this board concerning how i have gotten to where i am with it. its i gettin close, and im hopin to have it out for some shakedown autoX runs this summer.

so what are you runnin or buildin? :hick:

Mine will be one step away from a track car... eventualy. As of now, it's dd-able but It's a toy. I want it to be able to do mile track duity ( road corse) but still do ok on the road. Nothing to speical. As of now though.... it's stock

I've been itchin to get mine out on an Auto X course. I just need a helmet now. The car is ready... Just waiting on the driver now.

Unfortunately, my car will be classed in CP because of the K-member and altered wheel base. So far though nobody in my region has ran a CP car yet this year. I thought about cheating and running in SM but I'm probably better off in prepared because at least there are no BMW's or rally cars in CP. Just Mustangs without IRS and F-Bodies. The really bad thing is that most Prepared class cars are actual stripped race cars.

I'm gonna try and run in the novice group this year and then maybe get a spare set of rims with some good (race) tires for next year... If I dont suck too bad.

There's a guy here that Auto X's a blue 86 but I cant remember who it is. He posted a link to his results once I think. Maybe he'll see this thread and chime in.

nice! I've often thought of buying a stock 86 TC for G Stock. Right now the Nissan pickup is in SCCA AWD Stock for RallyCross. John and I are bolting together a prepared Porsche 944 for Stage Rally.

Be careful in STS, there's a LOT of really fast stuff out there. Prepared classes are for serious cars/drivers only.

my lil' bro drives an 85 Audi GT in AX racing. I just sold him my 87 Audi quattro 5000 turbo. Now what was I thinking?

I "HAD" an '87 Sport I used to daily drive and also used for club and other open track events. I've run at Charlotte/Lowe's and Road Atlanta road courses. I started with it stock and slowly lowered, stiffened and mod'd it until it handled and braked beyond belief for a Fox-bodied car. I kept the stock AOD and 5.0 though(other than full length headers) and planned to work on the motor last.
I work in motorsports, and had/have a lot of contacts. When I started building a warmed 5.0, I somehow got "influenced" (by free parts and great deals) to instead build a Nextel Cup motor. This will require some additional chassis work, but while I was finishing the motor, we had a storm and the upper branches of a huge oak tree crushed the roof, hood and both front fenders.
I have some health issues which affect working/money, but I hope to find another rustfree 87-88 body and continue the project.
I may have one or two pics somewhere, and I can try to take some pics of the engine on the stand and some parts I have waiting.
I'm near Atlanta so ya'll watch for me a car/body. No sunroof!

dave- i live just south of atlanta in LaGrange and i wanna see a bird with a nascar motor in it. i just forwarn you that after i rebuilt a jasper 4 spd that came out of a nascar racecar, your not ganna get away with using one on the street. the main thing i learned was with a nascar tranny, the reason they can upshift without the clutch is b/c it has dog gears. the thing with dog gears are you cant treat it like a road worthy transmission. imagine stop and go traffic for instance. you'll have to downshift to first every time you came to a stop. the transmission wont "just slide into gear" b/c with dog gears, there are no synchro's and in atlanta... at 5am or 5pm on 285 or even just i85 around forest park??? that would be.... 50 up shifts and 50 downshifts a mile.

btw, im so close to having my 87 sport crushed you might wanna come check it out.

You may have to email and tell me about the car.
As to trannys, I am using a special Richmond roadrace 5spd, not a catalog item. I was going to use a Jerico or Tex, but I wanted a closer spacing to the gears for roadracing than a 4spd has. I have never heard of a "jasper" trans. I have driven a Jerico, and know they are straight-cut gears with dogtooth face engagement, no synchros. They are noisy, but no trouble to shift once you are familiar with them. I could drive one on the street, and know people who do, but my limit to what I do has always been, "can my girlfriend,sister,mom drive it". Otherwise it would be paddle shifted and I wouldn't have detuned the engine, and it wouldn't have a passenger seat. This Richmond has helical cut gears and special synchros, but is made for racing. It can be shifted clutchless like a Jerico or Tex or C&R.
My biggest complaint about the racing trans set-up is the triple-disc clutch. It is like having an on-off switch and not a clutch like we know it. I am using a one-off Ram clutch they built for me. It is a single disc, and has a sprung hub and marcel lining, but the friction surface is sintered metal to handle the HP. The pressure ring is aluminum, and so is my flywheel. I hope it will be light enough.
This is also why I asked about the dash on a column shift car. I doubt I will be able to use the full console my Sport had, due to the left offset of the shifter.
But, all this is on hold until I find another car/body and of course have the money to finish it.
I see all the pics of everyone's cars here, read about the projects, and it makes me miss mine so much. I know it was a bit hard-core compared to most of what people do, but it was what I wanted.
