Please help me get back in my T-Bird!

I have been chasing a short in my brake lights for a year with no luck. The only thing I know is I can put a fuse in and they will work fine for a while then the fuse will blow at random times. I have the interior torn apart and I can hold the brake light harness from the dash all the way to the lights. There are no visible wires and seemingly no damage to the harness. Could this be my cruise control. What else is on that fuse? Please help me fix this problem, I haven't drivin it in a year!

Try changing the bulbs. The brake light element may be banging against the tail light element.
Yes it could be the cruise control module ,the hazard flasher or the multifunction switch. If you have a trailer lights cable it could be something there.

Brake lamps are on fuse #1, along with hazard warning lamps, cornering lamp relays and speed control. (NOTE: speed control is also part of fuse #17).

There is obviously a problem with something somewhere, or else you wouldn't be blowing fuses like that. Can you ever repeat the problem? Say, just when the cruise control is turned on, or just when the hazard lamps are on? That's process of elimination and just may help you.

If you cannot repeat the problem, the first place I'd check is the bulbs themselves, in the taillights, to make sure that no water can get to them. Might need to hose off the back part of the car, then check by applying the brakes.

If the bulb holders aren't getting water, then you need to inspect the wiring on the brake pedal switch. This is a tender area, as just about all of our cars have had wires come apart at that switch sooner or later. Also, if you have a 1986-88 car, check your third brake light wiring in the rear package tray...make sure you don't have bare wiring touching metal anywhere, and that the bulb holder is not disintegrated.

If the wiring checks out then you may need to replace your multifunction (turn signal) switch. Believe it or not, your brake signal wires are routed through this switch...it may be possible that a short circuit within this switch can blow out fuse #1.

After that, you'd need to look at wiring from the cruise control amplifier or the hazard lamp, or replace the cornering lamp relays (if your car has cornering lamps).

Let us know if that helps.

The brake light wires also go the Lamp Out Warning module if you have this feature.

The wire ends on the brake pedal switch have been replaced but I don't see any places where it would ground. Could it be the switch itself? Im thinking it may be the turn signal switch. My column is very loose after 195000 miles of use, and the switch itself won't hold on anymore I have to hold it up or down to keep the signal engaged. I will try replacing it and the other things you guys suggested. I miss my car so I hope this works! Thanks

I'm no mechanic, but could it be under the pedal. My woman said they had to replace a switch under the pedal twice in the 88' before I bought it. I need to get around to finding what's wrong with my brake lights as well on my yellow 86'.

Well I have replaced my multifunction switch and checked the wiring for bare places. Everything seems ok, but I won't know for a while. It won't blow as soon as you hit the pedal so I imagine I won't know for a month or more. I have changed the switch pedal a couple times already and it hasn't done much.
