Aftermarket A/C Blower motor?

After driving a Rental Car today, I got really jealous of the A/C System it had. Made mine look rather pathetic. Not that mine isn't cold, but even when the system is set to high, just doesn't come out as hard as I would like it too. And with passengers in the car, and not being able to "Aim" all the vents at me, things can still warm up more than I would like.

Does anyone know if I can rig up an aftermarket Blower Motor to the system?

Are there any replacements which will hook right up but are stronger?

Would simply buying a new one from Autozone suffice?

I put a new blower motor in my 84 and there was a big difference in the amount of air coming through the vents. The original one was squeeking really bad.

Perhaps you could use a better (higher amp) alternator.  It's possible the stock one is a bit weak and the motor isn't getting full juice to run tip-top.

The previous owner already did the 3G alternator swap, so I don't believe power is an issue.

So, if I were to pick up a new stock Blower Motor from...Autozone, you think It would make a difference?

And, does anyone know where I could find an Aftermarket one that would work?

I've never heard of an aftermarket or upgrade blower, honestly.

i think he's asking if a reman from a parts store would "blow" harder then his stock one. another problem with the air not moving fast, could be the resistor. that determines how much voltage goes directly to the motor. you could also have trash in the ducting. for it to positive pressure, it needs negative pressure, too.

Must be something wrong.  My 83 could freeze the nuts off a buffalo.

My 85 can have a girl smuggling raisins in no-time.

If the stock replacements aren't enough, have the motor rebuild at a shop that rebuilds motors, they can add more windings to increase the power output. Not sure if the wiring/fuses can handle it though. The stock blower uses 22A on high.

Apart from the chewed-up bits of plastic and fibreglass from the fender-top sound insulators where the rats were making nests, I also get the occasional broken piece of leaf that buzzes around in the fan for a few seconds before it gets blown against the A/C evaporator core. I bet if I detached the fan housing from the main unit and cleaned out all the  plugging up the fins, I'd get a lot more air flow.

When I replaced my Blower motor. There was a ton of  in the lower housing. The replacement was different than the factory unit. The factory unit was a motor that bolted onto a plastic piece. The new one was a motor made onto a metal . That was the only noteable difference. The new on does work better but my old one was from 83 when the car was made.

So, how does one get to the fan housing area? Is it relatively easy? If there is a bunch of "" up there, I would like to clean it out.

Follow the instructions on replacing your heater core. There's a great write up on the coolcats site. In fact, while you're in there you might as well replace your heater core. I wish I did my blower when I did my heater core because mine is really weak also. But since I only use it in winter I figured it could wait.

No you don't need to remove alot of stuff. I just had to take out the glove box. and remove 1 bolt that holds the lower dash tight to the body. Then the bolts holdind the fan portion of the heater box. The fan part comes out separate from the rest. The hardest parts was wiggleing it out of the spot. I followed what they said in the Chilton/Hayness book. Not bad at all I had it done in about an hour.

PS all the  seems to fall into the blower motor area as this is the lowest part in the heater system. If anything take compressed air and blow it trough the vent to get all the left over  out. While the blower is out ofcoruse

Good ol' Autozone repair guide
The fan housing basically "hangs" off the right side of the main housing.
