Deck Swap?

can I buy a stock ford cd player and put it in place of my stock ford tape deck?

will I have to change anything else or will it plug right in?

It probably won't plug right in.  It actually might be more work than using an aftermarket deck.

the newer ford cd players have a 3 plug set up the older cars don't, buy a after market, and a wiring kit, it makes it real easier

You can probably stick a little 'cubby' storage compartment in there.  Hit up a junkyard and you can find one easy.  Maybe someone on here even has one.

What are you planning on putting in for a system? Just a deck, or deck with amp?

You can use the EQ and factory premium sound with an aftermarket deck, but chances are that any aftermarket deck made since oh, say, 1990, will have a better internal amp than the factory premium sound. To use the factory premium sound amp and EQ, simply connect the aftermarket deck's low-level (RCA Pre-outs) to the speaker wires at the stereo connection.

You can also use the factory EQ with an aftermarket amplifier. To do this, simply do the same as above, but also remove the factory amp in the rear deck and install your four channel amp in its place. Of course you'll also have to replace all the speakers, but I'd recommend this anyway.

To install just the deck without using any amps you must unplug the EQ AND the amp in the trunk. Then, root around in your dash down behind the glove box door and you'll find a non-premium-sound audio connector. You can wire this into your new deck using the new deck's speaker outputs.

I won't even bother telling you how to use the factory amp but bypassing the EQ, because with any modern deck it simply wouldn't be worth it (most decks have their own interal EQ's anyway). You can. however, use the factory wiring if
you want to do this. I recommend using the factory wiring as it makes for a much simpler and cleaner install, plus doesn't add weight to the car. The only thing is, if you install an aftermarket amp in the trunk you WILL be required to run new power wires. The factory speaker wires are fine, but the factory power wires will not be sufficient.

Wiring info can be found on my website, here. There are stock wiring diagrams, and if you scroll down, there are a few aftermarket stereo diagrams. If you let me know exactly what your plans are (subs? amps?) I can be more specific.

as of now, I plan to just upgrade the speakers and put in a cd player. I don't need big beats. I have them in my cavalier.

What size are the door speakers?

Unless some wierd factory premium sound units used preouts, I doubt you'll ever find RCA pre-outs on a factory unit.

Explorers, Mountineers, F-Series...Probes..but...ALL of those used an external amplifier, like a "Prem Sound"...may have even been called prem. sound, to my knowledge...

I tried to put the fact. cd deck in my truck...wiring and connectors are different...i think only the 94-95-96 and up trucks/suv's got the cd deck, too...
Personally...a HELL of a lot easier to get a kit, and a aftermarket deck, stick it in...more power too than a stock cd player (assuming you can even find a working one...not to mention the wiring issues)
