HA! This is exactly how he wanted the pot to be stirred.

Ask your father what he was making back in 1973. My father and co-worker were both telling me how they worked for 1.35 an hour when they were kids. That was decent pay back in the day.

Fast forward, and now the national minimum wage is 5.15 an hour or so. Thats 3.81 times the wage back in the late 60's.

Now take that 3200 dollar Comet, multiply that by the 3.81, and you get 12,192. Not even 200 dollars off of that 14K cougar. Also keep in mind that the cars are in different classes and different price ranges due to the type of car they car.
It's Gumby's fault.

Economics. a persistent, substantial rise in the general level of prices related to an increase in the volume of money and resulting in the loss of value of currency (opposed to deflation).

Someone please explain how there is no such thing

Its a catch 22. Minimum wage is $1.35 prices are low because if they were high it would make the market unstable because no one could buy anything. Now the minimum wage is $5.15 and hour so the price on everything goes up because everyone has more money to spend.

I remember when I started supporting my family I made $500 every other week. We were fine. Now 10 years later I make twice that in one week and we still live the same way.

I sucked in econ when I took it but it is all economics. I learned that inflation doesn't exist but for the life of me I can't remember the explanation. Had to do with a few things.

Everything has to be perfectly balanced in order to not skyrocket prices or plumet prices. For some reason I think it had something to do with supply and demand. With population increases, there are greater demands for goods. Therefore suppy increases so demand is met but not so we have a large surplus. All of this costs money, therefore more money is in circulation than years ago to match the needed supply but is also matching the demand. See, the supply has increased to keep up with population growths but demand has remained the same.

Alright, now I'm starting to remember why I hated Economics class.

Please Explain :dunce:

According to that wiki thing:

In mainstream economics, inflation is a rise in the general level of prices, as measured against some baseline of purchasing power.

Using that as a definition, inflation clearly exists, but not necessarily across the board. A house costs double what it did seven years ago, but not many people have had their paychecks double. A gallon of gas is double what it was 10 years ago, but again, people's paychecks have not doubled. Many things have increased exponentially while wages have increased only marginally.

Of course, many prices have come down a great deal, too, especially in the tech sector. I paid over $400 for a 6.4-gig hard drive around about 1996. You can now get a 250-gig HDD for well less than half that. When USB thumb drives first came out they cost hundreds of dollars while having a capacity of 16MB. You can now get a 256MB thumb drive for under $30. Even things such as TV sets and car stereos are considerably better featured and for less money than they were even a decade ago.

If I were to measure inflation as the difference in the amount of money an average person would have left over (expressed as a percentage of his wages, so that things like raises don't skew the number) after paying the necessities (food, housing, utilities, transportation - again, expressed as the percentage of his wages that must go to pay these things) as compared to a point in the past (be it one month, a year, a decade, etc), I would say that inflation exists. It's almost impossible for a family to exist on a single income nowadays, where it was commonplace in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Two incomes are required to pay the bills that one used to.
