i need to rewire my stereo

I got the speaker wire to rewire my speakers, b/c i just got a new cd player.  the problem wasnt getting it in the car, but when i had it in the car the player went into protect mode.  the manual said that it was b/c the speakerwires were grounding out.  so i was ganna go ahead and rewire the speaker wires.  so i started in the trunk and i pulled the carpet back to see what i have to work with.  i was amazed that they electrical taped every wire in the trunk.  i honestly do not want to unravel that rat nest to get to the speaker wires.  with the original radio, everything worked fine.  honestly dont think the wiring to the rear speakers are the problem, so i was wondering.  the wiring that goes to the door speakers, are they wrpapped up like they are in the rear?  not knowing what was in there i was thinking i could just tape the new wire end to the old wire end and pull the wires through the car.  is that doable in the doors?  any help about this  wiring would be great.:birdsmily:

Its easy to run new wires, pull up the trim at the bottom of the passenger door opening, pull back the carpet and there should be a chanel there where the factory wires are run, push the bottom of the lower rear seat in and up and the seat will pop out, a couple screws on each side to get the footwell panels out and your ready to run new wires, shouldnt take anyone more than an hour to do.

The door ones are not taped up like that but theres no need to take out the factory wires unless you really want to.  Just run the new ones right next to em I did.  Oh and the door ones have a nice rubber tube they run in and it can be a PITA to get the wire through that.

The factory speaker wiring sucks. After I installed my ignition system on the engine and new head unit in the dash, I got this whining/humming sound coming from the dash speakers that varies with engine rpm and at idle changes pitch with the turn signal.

use a wire coathanger to run new wires through the rubber boot for the door speakers. new wiring would be better anyways. make sure to make good connections. don't half-ass it.

I always hated to rewire a car with an existing GOOD wiring (unless needed a high power wiring), in a T-birds/cougars with a body grounded speaker system, go under the kick panel, and You will see a set of plugs will separate the commons grounds to a separate speaker floating grounds to all speakers on the car...

When I converted My 85 bird with a premium sound I'll found all what I needed behind the kick panel, I guess You have the same on Your fox body car...

i already had premium sound in my car.  the speaker ground was bolted to the back of the stock headunit (i belive) b/c when i was driving down the road and the wiring harness started to fall out of the dash when i was pushing it back in, the red ground wire was arcing offf the metal holder piece the stock radio slid onto.  it surely isnt the power wiere b/c thats in the harness.  btw, i went to advanced autoparts and found 2 reels of 16 guage speaker wire.  both aluminum (ground) and copper (power).  it should work PERFECT.

As You like My friend, BUT I don't recommend the aluminium wires, theres a lot of loss in there, and is unsolderable...

i dunno, i think for just regular speaker wire an aluminum ground would work alright.  i mean i just have oem replacement speakers by pioneer.  now if you were goin with high power like amps and shiznit like that yeh copper all around would be good and more than 16 guage would sufice.    14 guage is a bit big for regular speakers.  i got rca outs for amps on the back of my head unit so i dont have to worry about that too much when i go boom

i was wondering about how the wires are routed to the rear windshield shelf.  would i have to remove the rear seats to get the wires ran back there?  or maybe the plastic int piece thats on the Cpillar?  i know from a previous post theres a channel that runs through the floor where the original wiring goes, but what has me puzzled is does the wiring go around or under the rear seat?  any help on removing the rear seat if neccisary would be great too.  i took a look at the wiring in the doors and im sure that wont take me but an hour (from start to finish, all steps) and prolly another hour running the rear speaker wires.  oh and i was wondering, the channel that goes through the floorboard, to get to it i know i gotta remove the bottom door panel on the floorboard.  but do i have to remove the pass seat?  b/c i have 8 way adjustble seats driver and passenger and i dunno if i'd really want to wrestle that seat and the heavy electric motors around.

No, you wont have to remove the passenger's seat.  When I did mine, I only removed the kickpanel, bottom door panel, the panel next to the backseat, and the rear seat itself.  I also removed the back of the backseat, but I was doing more than you.  I ran the wire into the side of the trunk over where the trunk hinge connects.
The bottom of the rear seat is easy to remove, there are just 2 small hooks that the seat attach to underneath it.  If you pull up on the seat a bit at the corners you can see them.  Simply push directly back and then pull up on the seat at those 2 spots, and it will come out.

ok well i got the wiresd to the rear tires in, took the back seat out, the kick panel, the door trim, and the panel next to the back seat.  used a wire hange to snake it through..  well i hooked up the wires to the back speakers, and spliced them into the harness.  i started to put in the door speaker wires but when i tried to snake the hanger through the boot i was successful, but i removed the glovebox and felt around and it seems i cant find a way to get to the boot from behind the glove box.  i looked around for panels i could remove but i couldnt find anything.  so i decided just to see if the wiring was right on the back speakers.  i plugged in the harness to the cd unit, it powered right up, put in a cd and the back speakers never sounded so good.  i decided since i could get the wire through the front doors, i'd leave them out for the moment untill i figured something out.  well when i put the radio in the dash, it all of a sudden started displaying "protect" and the manual says that it does this when a speaker wire is grounding out.  so i snipped both front speakers completely out of the harness and tried it again with it out of the dash and it seemed to work ok, so i put it back in and it says protect again.  then this is where it gets crazy.  when my radio was out of the car my radar detector would kick on and of on and off, thats all it would do.  now the radio is doing the same thing.  now there was a red wire that was bolted to the back of the old stock unit.  i spliced this into the ground wire no luck, so i undid that and it still did the on of thing.  just like the lighter.  my dad said that it would be either a fuse or a circuit breaker type thing.  i noticed there is a place that i could possibly put the red wire to the back of the new unit and thats my next plan of action as soon as i get the money for the connector and find the right screw that will fit (im sure i have one from an old computer).  i was wondering though, what exactly would make both my lighter and radio kick on and off.  it'll play for 3 seconds, stay off 3 seconds, repeat.

so to get to the point.. how do i run the wire through the boots in the doors, and what exactly is that red wire used for?  is it a ground? is it for an amp?  is it another red live power wire?  is it doing this b/c it MUST have the front speakers goin?  im lost:beatyoass:  :yuck: :disappoin :shoothead

i forgot one other thing, the last time it played the cd, there was interfierance, i had the volume on 18 and it sounded like blown speakers.. i know they're not blown. i inspected them and they're not blown.  just sounds like the radio when you have the electric anttenna all the way down.
