Alarm battery backup

Finally got around to installing my battery backup (put it off for months as its a PAIN to get to the main unit) and the alarm itself keeps working as I can hear the internal relays...but the siren no longer has its ground (tested with pulling the ground cable from the battery). How is this thing supposed to be any use if the ground cable is cut instead of the positive?

Its just the basic DEI battery backup on a viper 791xv. I'm quite confused. Thinking of just getting a second smaller battery to put in the trunk.
