AOD to a Holley carb

Today I got my Holley Street Avenger and I bought the appropriate bracketry kit for a Ford transmission.  I installed it as the instructions indicated but the look of it really bugs me.  The way it's set up it doesn't look like the tranny will shift until the throttle is wide open.  You can see in the picture that there's alot of distance between the kickdown adjustment screw and the throttle lever that contacts it.  On my Motorcraft carb the kickdown and throttle move together.  What did you other carb guys do?

Now I see.  The supplied spring is too ridiculously long to bind the transmission lever to the throttle lever.  Hmm....

Is it possible to do this without a spring at the carburetor end?  If I recall, the AOD's own kickdown lever springs back on its own as well.  I'd rather use the carbs tranny lever than fixing the rod directly to the throttle lever because if it's hard fixed to the throttle then I can't adjust it properly.

that linkage is for the c-3/c-4/c-5/c-6 transmissions.

lokar makes a cable kit and adapter for the holley carb to aod transmission.

You mean this?  So there's no way to use my kickdown rod?

The cable is light-years ahead of the rod as far as accuracy goes.  It's really worth the money.  $70 for the cable now or $500 for a new tranny later.

Yeah you're right.  Just a nuisance because it's an extra expense.  Ah well.  The end result will be well worth it.

I picked up the kit today.  Looks fairly straightforward though the bracket may need some modification to go alongside my stock throttle cable.  The annoying thing is the instructions call for a specialized tool (ofcourse) to tension the cable.  Can't I just tension it by feel until it's just taught?

Okay so here's what I'm thinking about doing.  I'll mark the angle of the transmission stud on the transmission end of the rod and I'll tighten the new cable til it attains the same angle.  Sound like a plan?  Just don't want to spend like $30 on a gauge I'm never going to use again.

On my '83 I made a 25 cent bracket out of aluminum to drive the T/V rod.  I slotted the bracket for adjustment, and did use a tranny pressure gauge. 0 to 5 PSI at idle speed, and 35 to 38 PSI at .400" of throttle travel. Remember idle speed is zero to 1 PSI, I idle at 1100 RPMs (drag car) not 700 RPMs like the manual says.  With the Trans Go shift kit it is real consistant.  5500 to second, 5500 to drive, and 4100 into OD with my foot flat on the floor.  I'm still using the column shift and don't move it to obtain the above.  The cable is the way to go, but you can make to rod linkage work well, just think it out.  Good luck,  Fred

As it happens I'm doing the swap tomorrow (Sat).  I'll be sure to post about it.

Just a little update for anyone who's interested.  My new setup is installed and functioning except for the Lokar linkage which is trying to pull my tranny's kickdown lever the WRONG way :beatyoass: I have to take a closer look at it but there's a good chance I'll need some extra hardware to make it line up properly.  But anyway the Weiand Stealth and Street Avenger are bolted in under my stock air cleaner with no hood clearance issues.  Even my HEI clears it all except for one cap latch that strikes the manifold and it wouldn't even do that if I wasn't too lazy to rotate the distributor.  My throttle cable reaches the throttle and I drilled an extra hole in my stock throttle bracket for the Lokar linkage so my throttle, kickdown, and cruise control are all neatly together.  Since I was ditching the stock hot air choke I opted to fill that hole in the exhaust manifold with this high temp u-fix-it steely stuff that I can't remember the exact name of right now but it was easy to apply and it hardened like concrete so I'm happy with it.  Soon as I'm really finished I'll post some pics and tell you how performance feels.

:grinno: Well I figured out what my problem was.  Being that I didn't bother buying a gauge for adjusting the linkage I was just going off what other people did and I thought the linkage had to be taught at idle but actually the way I routed the cable, it had to be a little loose.  So I took the car out for a little test drive, short and easy since I'm still dealing with a stubborn pipe plug that wants to leak coolant but....

Off the bat, throttle response is much better, the car feels light and quick, I didn't go anywhere near full throttle since I'm still playing with the new linkage but all the same the lower shifts were quick and sweet compared to my old rod (it used to feel like I was fighting with the transmission to push past the shift point).  Once I figure out this pipe plug's issue I'm going on a highway test drive.  Can't wait.
