Is It The Same Transmission??????!!!

hey my car is a 88 t bird lx and it came with a 3.8 v6. Im swapping a 5.0 in it. My question is , what is the transmission that came with the 3.8 v6, by the way its column shifter. Also is it the same tranny that came with the 5.0's .  Or is it a weaker transmission.. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ITS URGENT!!!!!

thanks

it is weaker in most cases, however, the tranny will work for a while behind the 5.0. Unless you are tricking out the 5.0, it should be fine for a while at least. Then you can save up for a better tranny.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Both the c4 and the AOD can be built up pretty stout, if your making big torque you can get a sb c6.

c-4 has no over drive. So good bye to freeway gas mileage. You could just beef up the stock aod by taking it to a tranny shop and tell them its for a mustang.

keep the aod, have it rebuild or buy a rebuilt one. theirs no need to go with a super duity heavy c4 or c6 and have to modify thing to make it fit and loose overdrive if your only doing a HO swap.  if anything, buy a good shift kit for it, and a external tranny cooler. that will keep your rebuilt transmission in one piece and let you beat on it for another 18 years

just get a shift kit with an aod and maybe some more clutches at a tranny shop. Oh and you might want to upgrade your rear end. to say 3.55 or 3.73 gears.

An honsestly, a stock tbird or cougar with a 5.0 is usally enough to toast a  civic or two.

Uhh.. right.

Anyway, you might want to upgrade the rear end to an 8.8 not just the gears.  My 7.5 lasted quite a while behind my AOD and HO.  My AOD is still going strong too.

And I sure hope a 5.0 can beat a Civic, those things are turds.  It's just kinda sad what a stock SO can't beat.

okay, 99 down civic. The 5.0 aint a dog stock like most people say. Compaire it to other 86-88 3500lb cars and it still aint bad.
