4r70w internals in an AOD January 20, 2014, 05:50:29 PM I need to do a budget rebuild and need it done quick. I have read on here that the 4r70w internals are a direct bolt up, upgrade for the AOD. Is this true?and if so, can i buy a 4r70w rebuild kit and put those internals in my AOD without needing to purchase anything else. P.S- I have a B&M shift kit. would really like a VB but its a super tight budget build. Thanks in advance! Quote Selected
4r70w internals in an AOD Reply #1 – January 20, 2014, 06:36:01 PM A rebuild kit will get you gaskets, seals, clutches, bands and steels. But for the hard-parts (stuff not meant to wear out), you'll need a 4R70 to get parts from. Mine was cool, because I work in a Ford dealer and the auto trans guy had literally EVERYTHING under his bench. The only thing I had to buy was a set of clutches and a front pump gasket. Anybody else would have to have 1 of both trans'. It's definitely a rewarding mod, though, and not many guys here have it. Quote Selected

It's not a shift kit/improver mod at all. Instead of the shift pattern being P/R/N/OD/D(3)/1 it becomes P/R/N/OD(3/4)/2/1. The epoxy mod allows you to shift the transmission manually from 1st, to 2nd, and finally to 3rd gear. You will lose the ability to lock out OD. I would recommend you only do the epoxy mod if you upgrade the OD band and servo to handle the extra abuse. The transmission in my Thunderbird has the epoxy mod but it also has a 2" OD band and an A+ OD servo. Quote Selected
4r70w internals in an AOD Reply #7 – January 26, 2014, 11:41:33 PM Thank you for the insight thunderjet.... last question.I'm pulling a 4r70w trans from the junkyard tomorrow. Is there any preference in them v6 vs v8, year to year, as far as using their internals in the 5.0 AOD? Quote Selected
4r70w internals in an AOD Reply #8 – January 27, 2014, 04:18:59 AM V8. 5.4L Econoline if you can find one, most 5.4 trucks will have a 4R100, and you don't want any of that, but if you can find a 5.4L E van with a 4R70W, grab that shiznit, because it's got the most clutches and best servos.
