are the hinges visibly different, or are they they same with the exception of the hood mounting holes? if they're visibly different, than i need to sell the hood and find an 83 specific hood

I put a TC hood on my 83 Cougar. The hinges were visibly different (in my case) in that the TC hood had the spring lifts (no prop rod) where the 83 hinges had no springs (needed a prop rod). I first tried to set the TC hood on the 83 hinges, and the holes didn't line up. I might have been able to drill them, but I said screw it and went back to the junk yard and grabbed the hinges from the TC. With those hinges attached, it bolted right up. I put the same hood on my 85 (no spring hinges) and it bolted right up without changing hinges. So- to sum it up, 83 hinges and hood holes are different, but where they mount to the body is the same. Just find a set of 84-88 hinges and you can use that hood on an 83.

unfortunately, not an option.. car has to remain 150% stock appearing.. now welding and drilling new holes, cleaning it up to hide the welds should work out.. i hope..

The hood will lay on the hinges just fine, it fits the contours of the bottom. If I recall though, if you try to use the 84-88 hood holes on 83 hinges, you can only get two of the four to line up, and at then the hood ends up too far forward (like the latch hits the header panel when you try to close it). I think the holes are square, and they have those threaded clips in them. I am working off memory here, heh, my 83 is long gone, and my 85 is in winter storage across town.

Is this car going to be in a 100% authentic car show or something? I would think a set of 84-86 non-spring hinges would fool judges. I mean, unless you've done the swap, I bet there's next-to-nobody else who even knows these differences exist.

yep, 100% authentic with a little sneakyness and trickery under the hood, but still 110% stock appearing

Now I know why the holes didn't line up on my fiberglass hood. I ended up slotting the holes in the hinges to mount the hood. Worked out fine.
