Water Pump Noise

So once and a while my water pump makes a noise, not really a grinding noise but sort of like a "whine". Now it's 99% of the time when the engine is stone cold. Yesterday in the snowstorm home, it made it on and off a couple of times while accelerating close to the shift points of the AOD. Today on the way to work, I did not hear it at all. Does this mean the pump is on the way out and I should replace it, or is this normal? I know my power steering pump whines in a similar sound, but that is "what Ford power steering pumps do".  I sprayed some penetrating oil at the pulley/water pump and the noise changed/went away, so I know it's the pump.

Pump works fine, I checked it for leaks last night and I took the belt off, there does not appear to be any play in the shaft. Just curious, I would rather not replace it at the moment in a snow storm, should I not have to.

I'd use it as is for now,and when the weather allows, swap it. Not that big of a job,and can save a lot of headaches down the road.

Alright. Sounds good. You guys have good luck with the stock replacements available at autozone or CAP?

Want a Motorcraft pump for less than $50? Order a FRPP replacement pump: http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=3223 I have one on my car and it's just a factory replacement Motorcraft pump with a FRPP sticker over the Motorcraft sticker on the box.
88 Thunderbird LX: 306, Edelbrock Performer heads, Comp 266HR cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, bunch of other stuff.

How can a brand new pump come without a warranty?

Takeoffs, meaning like "off-brands"?

Also, the ones at the parts store list a normal and a heavy duty application. The HD is twice as much money, is it just a longer lasting pump or is it actually more flow, etc. I may sound stupid asking this, but I went through hell (can I say that?) trying to find the right water pump for my 1972 Olds. I know it's not a big job, but I don't want to have to do it again in a year, lol. Or worse, buy a pump and have it not fit.

The HD pumps have a beefier impeller  externally they are identical .

"take offs" He had brand new motorsport crate engines and disassembled them. I bought a set of motorsport heads and pump from one and have a pump on my pick up.
