I would really like to go the OHC 4.0 turbo route myself, but I just can't justify that much $$$.  It might be cheaper to just MOVE to Australia :p

Here I thought I was only growing older and less interesting.
:hick:

I chose to drive shiznitboxes most of my life as I had a bigger picture in mind... RETIRE EARLY!!!
Usually I bought em and drove them into the ground, or resold it in a few months and made money to buy the next S-Box...

Only financed two vehicles in my life(41 years driving) and one was the Fairlane Cobra... Good move there... The other was as a '75 Granada the ex-wife, got... Another good move... :D

the boss 302 may be decent but its NA. likely it has the same drawbacks as al lthe NA modulars. powder rods and pistons.
From cruising the Aussie forums, the natives aren't happy with the powdered rods/pistons that come in the Boss motors either.

You can see from the spec dyno sheet that adding another 1000-1500 rpm to the redline would increase the area under the curve.

Forged rods/pistons could presumably increase the redline.

An argument for the sintered pieces is cost. A DOHC 5.4L with powdered parts will cost less than a 4.6L variant with a 100% forged rotating assembly and a M112 (with an intercooler) slapped on top.

Doubt it....Factor in a spouse, kids, mortgage (or savings fund for a house upon separation from the military).  Could they afford it?  Yeah.  Easily?!  Hmm...again. doubt it.

hahaha

do you know what the BAS for a Colonel is!? That's money just for the mortgage. Then you get paid even more for dependents. YES Easily! I have seen Colonels driving around in brand new

Yes I do. If you remember I too did my time in the service, youngin' ;)  BAS = Officers $202.76/month... You're thinking of BAH, which varies upon what part of the country you are in.....Albequerque New Mexico is the standard middle ground for determining BAH.  The 3 highest are:

1.  Long Island, NY
2.  Manhattan
3.  Beverly Hills

I live on Long Island.  I know a thing or two about high cost of living.
Using an O-6 (Colonel) with 20 years service, no spouse income (to inflate the number) and 3 dependents yields

$8,180.10  $98,161.20
BAS  $192.74  $2,312.88
BAH + $3,121.00 + $37,452.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cash Total  $11,493.84  $137,926.08
Tax Advantage + $1,110.76 + $13,329.12

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regular Military Compensation  $12,604.60  $151,255.20

Using NYC was 143K.

Seen what mortgage payments are around the U.S lately?  Plus home insurance, water, heat, electric, OH WAIT!!  Sally needs braces!  Oh , the hot water heater took a dump...we need a new one!  I never said he couldn't aford it.  He just may not have a whole lot of extra coin at the end of the month to throw into t-bills or an annuity fund.  If you can swing the payment and play investment boy at the same time THAT is affording it easily.

BTW, last time I checked full BAH was only authorized to active duty members who live off base (this includes reserve/guard members who are activated for deployments)

Just for giggles I did the same criteria for your area I got this:

Regular Military Compensation Calculator

Your Results

  Monthly  Annual
Basic Pay  $8,180.10  $98,161.20
BAS  $192.74  $2,312.88
BAH + $1,565.00 + $18,780.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cash Total  $9,937.84  $119,254.08
Tax Advantage + $585.91 + $7,030.92

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regular Military Compensation  $10,523.75  $126,285.00

20 + college makes him/her YOUNGEST 43 if the graduated HS @ 17.  I'm 31.  I beat that figure the past 2 years.  As I said NOT easily....unless he's been off base forever and bought a house 15 years ago for peanuts.
And I'm not bragging....I'm trying to show just how difficult it can be.  Take it from somone who knows.

I priced houses in your are similar to mine as well.  Very similar in price.....

thats another thing to think about early. its part of the reason im in the trade im in. retirement. so far my pension plan and anuity plan are great. im realy glad i have those otherwise id probably be sunk come time to retire. dont count on the government too be there for you come time to retire. i know how far it may seem away but being single, no kids and whatever the future is abstract. work a few years get hooked up and have a kid. that put it right into perspective for me. 15 years into the future would normally seem like a long ass time. well, my 4 year old will be in freaking college and my 2 year old will be just about done with highschool. i just had my 10th year highschool reunion. the last 10 years absolutely flew by. i remember how long high school alone felt too pass by nevermind grammar school. i remember how long a summer used to last. now it seems like 4th of july hits and the summers over, get the snowshovels ready. man it goes by fast.
