5.0 Mustang Parts for a 5.0 Cougar?

Hey, Folks --

Apologies if I've missed another thread dealing with this or posted in the wrong section, but I have a 1987 XR-7 with the 5.0L standard output engine. All stock & only 46K miles, but age is starting to play a factor and I need to start replacing belts & hoses & probably some A/C system parts as well.

Will 5.0 Mustang parts work with this?

My intention to to get as many Motorcraft parts as possible to keep the car looking original.

When I look at places like RockAuto, the Mustang's Motorcraft part numbers are different from the Cougar's BUT sometimes the third-party parts lists OEM part #s and in there I often see both the Cougar Motorcraft # and the Mustang Motorcraft #.

Thanks in advance for any tips, suggestions & advice you can offer.

All the best,
Michael

As far as A/C compressors and clutches go the Mustang parts are the same. The hoses are different, as the routing is different between the two cars.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the hoses are the same. The serpentine belt is also the same.

The beauty of sharing this platform with the Mustang is that we are now able to jump on the "restoration parts" bandwagon.

It's Gumby's fault.

If you have eatc, then the heater hose are different since there is a sensor in the way.

Although the belt routing is the same, the length is slightly different. Mustang uses a different length and there are minor differences in brackets.

Other then that, a bunch, like most any other part fits, but there are slight differences.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
