Water Pump Noise February 02, 2011, 09:59:32 AM So once and a while my water pump makes a noise, not really a grinding noise but sort of like a "whine". Now it's 99% of the time when the engine is stone cold. Yesterday in the snowstorm home, it made it on and off a couple of times while accelerating close to the shift points of the AOD. Today on the way to work, I did not hear it at all. Does this mean the pump is on the way out and I should replace it, or is this normal? I know my power steering pump whines in a similar sound, but that is "what Ford power steering pumps do". I sprayed some penetrating oil at the pulley/water pump and the noise changed/went away, so I know it's the pump. Pump works fine, I checked it for leaks last night and I took the belt off, there does not appear to be any play in the shaft. Just curious, I would rather not replace it at the moment in a snow storm, should I not have to. Quote Selected

The HD is twice as much money, is it just a longer lasting pump or is it actually more flow, etc. I may sound stupid asking this, but I went through hell (can I say that?) trying to find the right water pump for my 1972 Olds.
