I don't know if comparing a 44 year old car to a 22 year old car is a fair comparison. :D

Ok, so compare the selling price (NOT asking price) of any '88 Mustang GT to an '88 Turbo Coupe or XR7 in similar condition. Or compare any '88 Iroc to a Monte Carlo. With few exceptions Mustangs and F-bodies sell for way more money than Cougarbirds and G-bodies (one of the exceptions being the Grand Nationals and GNX's).

I can personally vouch for this: I just sold my pristine, modified '88 T-Bird for $4k. It took months of advertising, and exactly one person actually looked at the car (the guy that bought it). And he said he'd been wanting a T-Bird for years. There are not many out there who would say the same thing, hence the difficulty in selling. Meanwhile Kijiji (what we Canadians use instead of Craigslist) is loaded with fox Mustangs going for anywhere between $5k for a beater to $15K+ for nice ones. And they actually sell.

Unfortunately for you Cat guys, you've got it even worse. Traditionally Mercurys are worth less than their Ford counterparts, and this includes 67-73 Cougars VS Mustangs. Fox Capris are generally worth less than their Mustang brothers. And Cougars will generally be worth less than T-Birds when these cars appreciate. Buick/Olds/Pontiac guys are in the same boat. Firebirds are worth less than Camaros, Cutlasses and Regals generally go for less than Monte Carlos (again, excepting the GN), etc...

And don't get me wrong, they will appreciate, just not nearly as much as any Mustang. They just weren't, nor will they ever be, as popular or desirable. There's a reason you see dozens of Mustang mags and lots of Mustang aftermarket support while we sit on the sidelines.

The upside: Those of us who love them can actually afford them. The downside: Don't break anything, because replacement parts are unobtainium.
2015 Mustang GT Premium - 5.0, 6-speed, Guard Green - too much awesome for one car
