The single most important question is, "What's legal?"

That is, IF you are going to be doing any sanctioned racing.  Rules vary, so check into it.

Here's my post of the S&W kit I put in this winter.  It is an 8 point and would be legal to 10.0 for the drags.  You need an halo bar if you think you will go faster than 10.  You are legal without a bar down to 11.5 now and I did not get one till I hit 11.45 last year and got to go to tech.

The S&W kit is nice but the bars that go to the trunk will eliminate your back seat.  The only problem I had is that you had to trim the main loop for height and to make it even, and I think I cut it about a inch lower than maybe I should have.  But it does look nice with the headliner installed.

yeah i cant see the car ever going faster then 10.0, when all is said and done im hoping for low 11's but thats down a ways still lol... the car will see the drag strip more then auto x, but it is going to be more of a road race car that i can drive to the track. what sucks is the auto x tracks are all pretty far away, or cost crazy money to race at, thats the only reason i'll be at the quarter mile more often.

thanks guys, and Ted, thats the pictures i was searching for but couldn't find, just got gumbi's thread... i was thinking of where to weld the main hoop to, and the bars that go from it to the back, i'll have through the floor sfc's soon and i was thinking i should weld the cage to them but i also didn't know where to weld the bars that go into the trunk.

me thinks i'll need to look up some rules before i go welding things together, i don't want something to be a inch off and not be able to race...

thanks again, i'll be posting some pictures soon, i get paid tomorrow so i'll be picking up some 2x3" box tubing to get the sfc's done

Nate,

I just picked my car up from MD Race Cars are few weeks back. Find them here:

Amazing work.

Make sure you read the rules for the sanctioning body you race with and supply your cage builder with those very same rules. If you have a question about the cage rules, contact the club and get a tech inspector's email address.

I'm building a 1977 Toyota Celica GT Coupe. We road race with EMRA. She is one of three known 77's in North America doing what we're doing. In 2008 we scored Rookie of the Year honors. These photos were taken at Watkins Glen in September 2009 as part of the Vintage Grand Prix during the SVRA weekend.

And remember to use proper grade bolts for all of the belts and seats. Overkill on this one. For roll cage padding, get the stuff that is FIA rated. Find it here:

http://www.stableenergies.com/Roll-Bar-Padding-FIA-Type-A-Approved/productinfo/RBPAD-FIA/

Stable is a good store too. Been there once for a Kirkey seat.

Here's the official brochure:

Schroth makes great belts, and G Force makes FIA rated belts that are inexpensive. I'm leaning towards a Schroth 5 point harness.

A photo of the roll cage in my Celica appears in the PIT STOP section of the October 2010 issue of Hot Rod Magazine.  We opted for RCI Platinum belts by the way. Very good workmanship.
