my 1988 cougar XR7 got broke into

Hmmm, surely someone here might sell you a column for far cheaper...?
Yes, because owning a gun is such a crime deterrent?
I'd rent or else find the use of a locking storage place for whichever car you're not driving, or else get a beater car to drive every day, keep the good stuff for fun.
I just feel a gun will be a waste if you're at work, and your car is at home when it's broken into.
One last thing...if I built a car, and had 20K into, I'd god sure have all the work and parts covered before it was ever left out of my sight. There are people in the world who you've never met, and never will, who can't seem to respect others' hard work and money spent on something nice and they feel they have to vandalize or steal nice stuff.
I don't mean to sound condescending, cause I'm not trying to be, just saying that "out of sight, out of mind" may be a better ideal than buying a gun strictly for defense reasons.
Sorry to hear about your cars...I too like the scheme on the Cougar..hope you get it fixed soon to as good, or even better shape. I'll look around here, I *think* I might have another column, if you're interested. I'll take considerably less than 3 bills for it too...but let me look, not 100% sure it's out there.
