Can a 3.8 column shift AOD go into a 5.0 floorshift car?

I conducted a search but I cannot seem to find some guidance on this one.  Can I put the 1987 LS 3.8 column shift AOD into a 1988 XR-7 5.0 floor shift car?  The OD band in After is slipping and I would really like to hold off on the performance rebuild until I am ready for the whole drive train upgrade.  I have the 3.8 AOD in my basp00get costing me nothing so I would like to put that in to buy me time.  How involved would that be?

If there is some info already out there, a url would be appreciated.

yes you can but you may have to drop the pan to change out the linkage  bc they are differant that is the only thing that needs to be changed.  or if you dont take the pan off maybe just change the arm. you will see what im saying.
trick flow street heat intake , 24lbs injetors, ported GT-40's (Chip) long tube headers. and a Performance Automatic C4, with a hurst shifter!

you need to drop the pan, and flip the linkage 180* for where the linkages meet the transmission, then add your floor shifter cable brackets

i did it on my back, under a car, so it shouldnt be bad if the tranny is already out of the basp00get
It's Gumby's fault.

Ok, cool.  Since I'm so pressed for time, I'm just going to pay a guy $300 to "remove & replace" (R&R) my transmission.  First though, I need to see how easy it is because he is very familiar with the 5.0 Mustangs but hasn't dealt much with the column shift AODs.

So the bell housings and other stuff match up then?

transmission is a direct swap

to flip the shift lever:
-drain fluid and drop pan
-remove valve body
-loosen large nut on back of the lever, dont take it off, just loosen it a good bit
-pull the roll pin out
-slide the lever out to where it can rotate freely, rotated it 180*
-slide it back in, and replace roll pin
-righten nut on back of the lever
-replace valve body
-replace pan
It's Gumby's fault.
