Exhaust system...X or H? October 21, 2004, 07:41:29 PM Which type of exhaust system should i get for my cougar? H or X pipe? I figure im just going to do the exhaust till i can get an engine swap. So far i've heard that 3' is too much for the stock cougar (dual but single is ok) engine and 2.5 is best (for dual)...any opinions? Also, WHICH ones specifically (ones that would fit a 93 mustang?) should i get? Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #1 – October 21, 2004, 10:10:42 PM depends on what you want for the engine. will it be supercharged, or turboed? x is better unless you have forced induction because of the increased exhaust pressure the x eventualy acts as a pinch point, with a h pipe, it just skips the eq. tube. im running a h pipe because i plan on a supercharger. Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #3 – October 23, 2004, 01:15:28 AM I have an '88 Sport with an AOD and a Bassani x-pipe. Sounds awesome. Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #4 – October 23, 2004, 01:52:52 AM Man, if I'd have known that X-pipes fit around an AOD I would've gotten one. Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #5 – October 23, 2004, 02:20:15 AM Ihave a Bassani X on my 87 XR-7 along with 1 5/8 mac shorties,Ravin lers and Dynomax (modified) tailpipes. I picked up 3 tenths just from the X pipe swap back when I was running stock stang headers & stock tails. Also - sounds like NASCAR not like every mustang on the road. Big plus in my books. The ler shop had to modify the x-pipe to get it to work on the driver side (due to the transmission). H-pipes = just as cool. -Bryan Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #7 – October 24, 2004, 01:06:40 PM If state emissions might ever be a concern for you, go with the H-pipe - an X-pipe will not be able to accomodate catalytic converters. Or so my exhaust guy told me before he cut out my X-pipe Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #8 – October 24, 2004, 01:40:59 PM most of the companies I've seen offer with or without cats on an x-pipe.I went without on mine but there's lots of room for them. Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #9 – October 24, 2004, 02:07:38 PM Yea, you're probably right but I'm going on the word of the mechanic who did my exhaust. Who incidentally drove a Grand National and guaranteed that I'd be selling my T-Bird someday soon Probably just a Ford hater who was trying to mess up my ride Nah just kidding, but I do remember him saying there were clearance issues with the AOD transmission if you had cats on an X-pipe (not necessarily that they won't fit, but setup concerns, etc.), so it may be worth looking into just in case. Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #10 – October 24, 2004, 02:43:52 PM My x-pipe came from bassani with 2 cats and since then I have had to replace the cats. I passed CA smog tests in August without a hitch. The car originaly came with 2 cats, so when the smog guy looks under the car and sees 2 cats then everything is as it should be according to him. Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #11 – October 26, 2004, 07:48:59 AM Just dont get a MAC H-pipe. I wrestled with mine for around 4 hours trying to make it fit! Nice quality, poor fit... I heard the BBK's fit much better as far as budget pipes go.http://www.cardomain.com/id/dogcharmer69 Quote Selected
Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #12 – October 26, 2004, 08:45:48 AM Hah! I got the cheapest one around! My Summit H-pipe went in seamlessly without any fighting or anything. Only $109 too. Quote Selected

Re: Exhaust system...X or H? Reply #14 – October 26, 2004, 01:17:30 PM bassani x is definitely the way to go. I could actually feel a seat of the pants difference when I swapped out the h-pipe for an x-pipe on my '74 F100 Quote Selected
