if you use i believe pre 69 closed chamber heads on a post 70 block w/ open chamber heads you get 12.5:1 compression ratio. had a buddy in h.s. had a 69 deville vert we called the attacilac. he did the head swap on a full option car(read heavy) with an adapter plate and 800 cfm vac secondary holley on 93 pump gas w/outlaw 108 octane booster and ran don't remember exactly it was 20 yrs ago about 14.70 at bithlo (orlando speedworld) before they put in the concrete launch pads. oh i almost forgot it had a lincoln locker rear also.

I tried to run the early heads on a late block and it was not a pretty site (74 to 76 engine, with 68-73 heads give you about 12 to one).  Lots of problems with this and it will not run on pump gas.  But when it did run it was sure nice sounding; rev like a small block with tons of power.  Best to stick to 10 or less compression with these engines or use race gas only.

a 500 cubic inch engine in a fwd car?

For sure, in early 70's the Eledorado (Cadd), and Toronado (Olds) was a FWD with a 501ci, relatively low power and HIGH gaz eater...

BUT the front driveshafts was VERY BIG, but a bit fragile for a 5k over lbs car...

Dom.
