Drivetrain Tech / Differential axial check plug
Are you changing, checking or topping off the diff lube?

If changing, you all of the bolts out, but leave a few in the top to prevent the cover from falling off uncontrolably when you crack the seal.  Prying yhe cover way from the diff body in this manner keeps the mess made to a minimum.

If checking, you remove the plug and using your index finger, stick it into the hole.  The gear lube level should be at or just below the hole.

If filling, place a hose onto the "tip" of the gear lube bottle.  Stick the other end of the hose into the fill/check plug and invert the gear lube bottle.  Squeeze the bottle forcing the gear lube through the tube and into the diff.  You will use more than one bottle of the correct gear lube.  Exactly how much will greatly depend on your diff, whether it has a cooler or an extra capacity diff cover.

I hope that this helps.

Yeah, I am thinking it is a combination of hard fleet service, poor maintenance and poor design.  As Tom said, these joints are not greasible, but that doesn't mean that they can't be checked for wear, binding or excessive corrosion.  That being said, I cannot for the life of me, figure out why there would EVER be a plastic coupler in such a critical system... and certainly not buried within the column where it is even less likely to be noticed.

These cars tend to look better with dark colors.

I would tend to agree with you, but I think it has more to do with the darker colors making the style lines, such as those on the rear of the roof panel of the 84-86 'Birds, more visible. You can still see and appreciate the lines when using lighter shades, but the lines tend to blend more.

Ill try to get you some physical proof, like my military pt files that i have.
I hardly think that is necessary.

Maybe they were doing it wrong but anyone who was military years ago may back me up on this.
I can back you up with regard to the way the Military determined members of the "Chub Club", in decades past, but that doesn't mean that they were doing it right or that it was accurate.  Back in those days we had little else to do while under way for entertainment, besides watching movies and working out.  I can't count on all of my digits how many people were placed on probation for having neck, check and waist sizes larger than "normal", but who could routinely bench and leg press a Mack truck.

I know that the hairy dash is made wider than stock, because it is designed to go into a variety of race cars.  It might be worth you time to call hairy glass and talk to them, measuring your dash, outside to outside dimensions.

Are you gonna strip the car of all wiring and then use a wiring harness/kit designed specifically for a race car?  If so, I would recommend that you carefully remove harnesses from the entire car, being mindful of the brittle connectors, clips and wrapping. I will buy your harness myself, if it is decent condition.  As for the Dash.  You can probably get away with a Fox stang race dash from a vendor like hairy glass.

I did notice that, yes.  It looked like a moving part that seems to have been completely ignored.

Hmm, I can't really imagine a safety system such as steering being so dependent on a single piece of plastic...

... but in order to keep moral up, doom and gloom isnt a good pep talk method.

In the first place, what I was saying was the unadulterated truth.  It is not my intention or desire to put a happy face on a serious problem or blow smoke up someones behind just to make them feel better or in the name of "good" morale.  Such practices are for the devious and brain damaged.  They are short term sweetness to cover for long term damage and destruction. That is like someone saying, "yeah, I am gonna kill you, but I am gonna tell you a joke first..."or maybe someone saying to their children, sure we can go to Disneyland next week, but you just won't get to eat for the rest of the year.  Real morale can be obtained by telling people the truth, even when they don't want to hear it, and then taking every action necessary to lead them out of the swamp in which we find ourselves, reporting accurate progress along the way.  People will see the light at the end of the tunnel and know that whatever pain they may be feeling, will eventually end and free their children and Grandchildren from suffering in a similar way.

Curious what color the interior is, looks black or char. grey. I have a bird that same color in the junk and it has blue interior which confused the bejesus out of me.

The "raven" cloth interior fades over time and appears to be a medium to darker blu'sh and grey instead of the original colors of charcoal and grey. SMS might have the material for restoration if necessary.
