There was a bit of mountain bike/horse trails to navigate (like getting to this particular spot), and we were on cross bikes. This year was an exploratory run. Next year we'll hit it harder. Show us your mug (personal photos) Reply #1181 – December 14, 2013, 08:49:41 AM Cute kids. They do grow up fast! Here's a tip for you guys to have more play money when they grow up and get to college age. Colleges WANT to PAY your kids to come to their school if they can get into the top ten in their class. Regardless of your income or the size of school, they want to graduate students. Research shows that those kids tend to succeed and graduate. So, do all you can to instill good study habits and foster the goal of striving for a 4.0 and college can cost a LOT less than you fear. It costs you time and some frustration early on, but if you start early doing all you can you will find that by middle school age they kind of do it by themselves without you riding them constantly. Most schools today allow you to follow your child's progress online, making it easier to see if they are completing assignments and in which areas they may struggle. It makes it possible to monitor their study weekly and fix problems before it results in a bad grade on the report card. Once the kids know you think it's important it becomes important to them also.My strategy when they were in high school was that I told them that getting grades was their JOB. If they failed to achieve due to lack of effort, they would be expected to get a real job and pay for things themselves. As long as they used their time wisely and performed well at their 'job' of getting grades, I would keep them in a little spending money.Honestly, my wife was the one who did most of this early on. I just helped set rewards and punishments and helped with homework and such. I thought she was being too involved..........but I am thanking her now that Liz is in post grad classes (still being paid to go to school AND with a cash stipend on top), and John is attending on scholarships as well. For the state schools they attend I'm talking about having NOT paid around $80,000 so far with John in his second year.I'm certainly not telling anyone how to raise their kids, just relating what worked for us. If college is in your kids plans, think about it! :) Quote Selected
