Is the Tremec 3650 compatible with the 5.0 platform?

To answer my own question ... and anyone else that may ask in the future ...  The answer is no.

Now to explain why so the rest of the class knows for future reference. The TR3650 does not have a removeable bellhousing and it has the bolt pattern for the mod motors only.

It might still be possible...with some sort of 1/2 inch thick adapter plate between the bellhousing and the engine that would have the bolt holes for the tranny and the small block pattern.

I made an adapter plate for a t-56 from a firebird to a 351w pretty easily but found out the real shoot was that gm had a backassackwards clutch design.  Pull instead of push.  The only solution was an expensive hydraulic throwout bearing from mcleod which would be a pita to replace when the seals blew and would have had to install hydraulic master for this as well.  :flip: GM

somebody was selling T56 w modular bellhousing to 5.0 plates on evilbay not too long ago. i saw them when i was looking for T56 stuff. why you wouldnt just buy a 5.0 T56 bellhousing from somebody that makes one instead of trying to make the modular one work is beyond me. im sure someone could make a plate for the 3650 as well.

if you got the adaptor plate from a T56 from a cobra than you probably could have used the T56/5.0 bellhousing on your 351. this is the peice wich converts the T56 to a mustang/cable clutch setup....

I thought that a company did make a T56/5.0 bellhousing...
Something I may look into real soon, with my 351w project.

I had always thought that when the 3650 came out it was for the 5.0. I seem to remember drooling over the ads for them in MM&FF magazine about a decade ago...

The problem with the T-56 transmissions is that you just cannot bolt on a different bellhousing, the front plate of the transmission isn't like a T-5.  The Gm, ford, and viper front plates are all different and meant for a specific bellhousing.

Mcleod makes a modular bellhousing system (expensive as shiznit) that will allow you to bolt up a gm t-56 to a ford engine.

These T-56 are not simple, trust me.  The early GM T-56 that was in the LT-1 had a very shallow space for the pressure plate and clutch because they had a backwards design:  the clutch arm pulled the fingers of the pressure plate instead of every other transmission made by man to this day:  the fork presses against the fingers to release the clutch.  This means the input shaft of this particular t-56 is shorter (and is 26 spline).  The only way I found of making this work was to make an adapter plate and use the LT-1 bellhousing, because if you tried to use anyother bellhousing, the input shaft would never be close to the engine.

A Ls-1 T-56 would work and also the viper t-56 would work.  Or you could just buy the Tremec T-56 that has been designed with a 5.0 bell:  http://www.ddperformance.com

sure you can...
they make a bellhousing that bolts up to the ford adaptor plate....it simply replaces the modular belhousing. if i wanted too use my t56 on my 5.0 instead of my 4.6 all i need is the new bellhousing clutch fork and tob.i could also use the GM or viper versions of the T56 with either of my engines using the ford adaptor plate i have (part of the 04-04 cobra).

depending on what type of clutch you want too run you can use the stock 10 spline input shaft or upgrade to the 26 spline.

also keep in mind that if you want too bolt one into a fox mustang the speedo wont work. there may be a conversion for that but im not sure. you deffinetly can buy a new tranny from tremmec that has it though if you are willing too buck up the cash. the fox stangs use the cable driven speedo. sn95 stangs and lucky enough, fox tbirds and cougars run an electronic speedo. you also have an electric reverse lockout todeal with...no biggie though.

now..the 3650...im not even realy sure what that is...im not up too speed on all the different trannies out there. reguardless, im confident that an adaptor plate could be made up for its bellhoousing but i cant see it being worth the trouble...
