sqelling from engine compartment

I have a 1985 3.8L V6. The car when idling and at start up gets a squelling sound that comes from the engine compartment. Once you increase the idle speed it stops. Also, a lighter squelling sound occurs when making turns particularly at really slow speeds. Any ideas ?

Sounds like the belt that runs the power steering pump.

Check your belt tensioner. I had a little bit of squeeling and then it siezed on me.

That was fun. It sounded like I was killing a cat and I lost most of my power. I managed to limp the car into a funeral home parking lot.

Actually may be your alternator belt.  If I'm correct the 85 3.8 didn't have an auto tensioner did it?  Or did the alt have a serp. belt and the rest was v belts?
