rear shoulder restraints

i thought i saw somewhere that their was an option for rear shoulder restraints in the 87-88s. id realy like too ditch the lap belts in favor of safer shoulder belts.

im sure something from another car wouls work but my main question would be where too tie them in. is there a spot already for them somewhre?

In my 88 and my 87 cougars, I have 2 shoulder belt harnesses in the back with a centre lap belt. I dont think I have ever seen a 87 or 88 (any make ) with just lap belts in the back. Maybe it was a required Canadian thing ??

My Canadian '88 'Bird has rear lap belts, as did my '87 Sport and '88 Cougar. The only 'Bird I ever owned with rear shoulder belts was the '91

Regardless of year, I've never seen a Bird/Cougar with rear shoulder belts...must be a Canadian thing...?
Even our '89 only has lap belts in the backseat.

My wrecked 88 cougar LS has the rear shoulder belts. If any one wants them let me know. Also I bet the ones out of a tempo could be made to work.

I want the rear shoulder belts, so, I too got some out of a newer Cougar or Tbird for my 87 T-bird.  I studied the upper mounts on the junkyard model and see that they simply mount to the thin sheet metal under the backlite.  I do not have a micrometer to measure if the metal under the newer cars is significantly thicker than mine.  So far, I am nervous about putting my loved ones into my "Probly ok" design.  Anyone actually switched them out?  I

As most of you know, my '87 (Roxanne) has been in my familily since she was born. She came with the regular lap belts in the rear, BUT...

I recall receiving a letter from FoMoCo sometime around two years after we purchased the car. The letter was offering (advertising) the availablility of having rear shoulder belts installed "for added safety" if you wanted them. I do not recall all the specifics, but I do remember that the letter was definitley from Ford, and that the work would be performed at a dealer. I do no recall what pricing, if any, was mentioned in the letter.

Another thing I remember for sure (and what kept me from being interested in adding the shoulder belts):

The "new" shoulder belts were only available in BLACK!!!

There was absolutely NO WAY I was going to have seat belts in the back that didn't match the color of the rest of the interior! :nono: If Ford had offered the option in the right color, I probably would have been VERY interested in the addition, me generally being the way that I am...liking to have every available option!

I wish now I had saved that stupid letter! (and dammit I wish Roxanne had the sunroof!):D
