Amp Rack

Who here has an amp rack in there car.  I am wanting to relocate my battery to the trunk and build a nice combo battery amp rack.  I'm not wanting to enclose the battery because I have an optima.  I don't usually do audio stuff but I shampoo'd the trunk carpet in the cougar today and I decided that the amp need not roll around on the floor anymore.  What has everyone here done?  Its only a Kenwood 600 watt.  More than enough for me.

I attached some velcro to the bottom of my amps and have them stuck to the shelf in the trunk towards the front of the car.  They don't slide around at all and are pretty stable.  Do you have a sub box in there?

I will be building a custom enclosure to go under the package tray.  I wan't my two tens but I dont want the big bandpass box i have now.
I'm thinking I'm going to build a battery box on the right side of the trunk and mount the amp to that.

One's an Alpine 4-channel, the other is a Precision Power. I've never heard of any problems mounting amps vertically - given that they're solid state with no moving parts or acid to spill I can't see what difference it would make...

If mounted vertically, you should mount it in such a way that the cooling fins run vertical as well.  I attached this pic but Thunder Chicken's photo shows it too.

Heat rises, If the fins are vertical it allows the heat to escape from the heatsink.  If they are horizontal it creates little pockets of heated air that will not move away from the amp, causing it to overheat.  If its flat it doesn't matter.

I was tired of having my amp attached to my box.  So I took a piece of MDF and mounted it at such an angle that it fit between the top of the rear deck and went down.  I will take a couple pics to show what I mean.  It cleans everything up quite nicely.  Allowing the wires to be hidden behind the board.  I need to upgrade to a bigger alt soon though and or even a new battery as well.  Sometimes with high current draw from my amp the voltage goes from 13.8 to about 11.7. :S

hmmm, nice theory, never thought of that. makes sense. must be realy porking mine as they are mounted upside down. i think its probably a non issue with a quality amp. dead airspace is dead airspace. other than a sub moving air around in a sealed trunk.
