finally got around to installing the mark viii fan

It had to be trimmed about 1/2" around the shroud and the mounting tab needed to be cut off. Here it is, fan cost me $15.90 and the controller was $110.00. Very nice setup. The controller increases current gradually only when needed. Also I bought the indicator light that changes from green to yellow to red depending on fan speed. This fan pulls huge amounts of air.

Where did you wire your ignition input to? (the yellow wire)

I was hooking up a new alarm also so I had to run an ignition wire for that too so I just tapped the fuse box with them both. I actually might hook the ignition (yellow) wire to a 12v contant cause I like the quick cool down the controler does when you turn the car off and if you keep the yellow hot till its done. It only runs an additional 20-30 seconds.

Do you feel it was an adequate cooling upgrade for the money? I find myself wanting to add a bit more cooling power to my Mark VII.. and if I recall, what I wanted to do would've come out to about the same amount of money you've spent. If you're happy with it, I'd definitely consider changing my own plans.

Man, that's a slick set up. Looks totally factory. I'd like to try that if I could find one of those fans. I'm over due for a wreching yard treasure hunt anyway...

Oh yeah man its well worth the money. The fan pulls SOOOOO much air its crazy (4000+cfms from what I've read). My temps are perfect now with the mark8 fan and dccontroler. The fan only gets up to full speed in bumper to bumper traffic @95+ with the air on. Plus it's really quiet. Couple of things you have to realize about the dccontroller is that it will only run the fan as fast as it needs to cause it has its own temp sensor in the radiator. It gradually turns the fan on so it doesn't stress the electric system with a 40+amp spike that the mark8/relay setups are pr0ne to have.

On highway speeds above 50mph the fan isn't even running

I used the Taurus/Continental e-fan, no mods. Your setup looks good though!! :bowdown:

Yeah, I've seen the DC Control box before.. think someone else here may have linked to it before.. but thought that with that plus a new electric fan, it might be out of my more immediate price range. But with you paying $16 for a Mark VIII fan like that, (hopefully I can get one close to that cheaply) that suddenly put this option back into the picture. I had been expecting to pay new electric fan prices before I'd be able to use something like that.

My plan had been to buy one of the cheaper control boxes that just went on at X temperature and went off at Y temperature, and hook that to an 800 CFM reversible fan used as a pusher. (so yes, it would've been no more than 600 CFM) Then use that along with the stock clutch fan. I think the controllers were around $60 and so was the fan I had in mind. But I like your method much better.

Random and probably stupid question: When eliminating the stock clutch fan for going electric, do you have to get shortened bolts or just reuse the bolts from the old fan?

Darnit, I wish I never passed on that MarkVIII fan some time ago. Your install looks good, I want the exact same setup. I can't believe you got that fan for $15. lol.

just picked up a 94 mkviii fan today for $10.60 at my nearest youpullit.i have a few questions.could anyone tell me where the 3 wires go,i.e,black for ground etc. etc..it looks like you didnt have much room between the fan and the core once you trimmed it down.not much room between the fan motor and the waterpump pulley either.i might have a problem with clearance due to a 3 core radiator.

if you look closely at the connector you will see a "+" and "-" sign. Off the top of my head I think the one in the middle will not be used. As far as cutting just trim off like 1/2 to 3/4 and try it. Don't trim too much cause you don't want the blades to bottom out with the radiator.

If it still doesn't fit. Go back and pick out a taurus 3.8 fan its very much the same except it has 16" blades insteed of 18"

Buy the dccontroler !! the fk-35...very nice product you will be very happy with it.
