3.8 auto still cutting out!!!!!.

Start my 17 mile  journey to work starts first turn and drives and idles beautifully.at about 15 miles crusing at 60mph  engine cuts out with no loss of power, spluttering or warning so I pull over put into park engine fires first turn and all is normal again.any help on this would be most welcome as it starts straight away after cutting out not sure if it's the tfi module playing up.

What year is the car?

I had an 83 3.8 with a bad PIP sensor in the distributor that would die like that. I also had an 83 5.0 with a bad crank sensor wiring harness that had the same symptom.

Typically if it's the TFI it will only start back up after it cools down. If it starts right back up, no problem, I would say it's a bad wire or intermittent sensor. You could start it up and jiggle the wiring harnesses and see if it dies. That's how I found my bad crank sensor wiring problem. I don't think 3.8s had a crank sensor though. But an intermittent PIP might be a possibility.

It's a 86 I have tried moving the harness around, also checked ignition switch and changed the battery leads.pulled codes nothing there. I did notice the last time I reset my ignition timing with a strobe (spout disconnected) the timing mark was not a single line but a inch long blur so set in the middle..pip?.

I'd suspect the blur issue is more related to the light than a defect in car...

Rather than just throwing parts at it, I'd try a different timing light...

I have tried using another new strobe with the same result.going to pull the distributor off at the weekend to see how worn it is before I get a replacement pip.
