87 5.0 EFI Bird Wiring Issues February 21, 2017, 09:35:20 AM Hey guys, I acquired an 87 LX 5.0 EFI about a year ago and been getting her drive worthy. Charged the battery over the weekend and started to car to let it idle yesterday. Started fine and idled great. Let it run for 15 minutes or so then turned it off. About a half hour later I went to start it again and upon turning the key I heard a pop and a thin line of smoke came up from around the solenoid where the main jumble of wires is. Car went completely dead. Not sure where I should start to troubleshoot the issue. Since the car completely died, no power to anything I wouldn't think it is as simple as a random fuse? The other part to all this is that the previous owner mentioned something about rewiring the harness to bypass the MAP sensor. That was an issue I was going to get around to fixing but wondering now if it could be one of the issues. Any recommendations on where I should start? Quote Selected

87 5.0 EFI Bird Wiring Issues Reply #2 – February 21, 2017, 12:09:43 PM Yup. The wiring in that area seems to be underengineered. If you've ever seen any 5.0 EFI foxbody cars in a salvage yard due to fire, it usually started in that area. Quote Selected

87 5.0 EFI Bird Wiring Issues Reply #4 – February 21, 2017, 01:58:15 PM I basically had to replace everything over there a few years ago while upgrading the alternator. There's a connection further up that runs under the battery tray. Mine was rather bad. Had to hard wire everything. Quote Selected
