i bought my bird for 500 bucks out of a junk yard...i have never thought of it as a pos

Pahaha, I almost did exactly the same thing last year.  Except my parents would have been a lot more understanding...I say you tell them you bought the car for $100, and to look at it as more of an investment than a piece of junk.  If your parents are anything like mine, though, your real problem lies in where you're going to keep it.  As far as tranny goes, it's the workhorse AOD.  My dad had one in his '68 F-100 that was mated to a 5.0 out of an '88 or so 'Stang.  Even after putting over 150k on the tranny it still ran strong.  Well, he had a shift kit installed...but regardless, they work well and handle power pretty well, too.
