Serious safety problem with my coug

Ok
while waiting for a light to turn green my car suddenly lurches forward as though i pressed the gas but i did not.

this really has me bothered and makes me wonder how related it is to the bucking in right / left turns.

could a power booster cause this since my foot was on the brake?

scared the outa me cause i was luckly 10 or so feet behind the other car. Quickly i threw it into N and when it was time i dropped it back to drive. Never happened again this afternoon but this morning when it did, i almost wanted to park it for safety reasons. If something happens like this even once,,it worth parking in my book till the problem is found.

I remember my old 84 did something like that. It would idle at 2000 and kick down but next time you accelerated it stayed at 2000 and coated at 40+ mph, now this was all over a period of one saturday night. By the end of the night I would stop at a light and it was idling like a mofookie wouldn't kick down anymore. I got alot of stares. never used neutal just held the brake. Drove it into dealer Monday AM, as it was 1984 and the car was under guarantee lot of people looked as it revved like crazy while I just held the brake and drove the sucker into the dealer garage. I think they were scared wimps. I think it was an IAC thing but it was 20 years ago.

What is IAC?

Can a bad Map sensor cause high idle like that?

Idle Air Control. Bumps up the idle on cold start, with A/C on, etc.

IAC or TPS...those are usually the culprits for surging like that. You can usually clean out the IAC. Have you run any EEC codes on the car? If one of those are bad they'll throw a code.

Ill check the swing of the tps ohms for smoothness.
i have a idle control motor assy (CFI)
My car will not give up codes at all. Never has since i became a member of this board and was showed how to pull them. A shop tech was only able to pull code 11 but then his tester could not communicate with the eec.

Is a new IAC just as expensive as a new TPS, and will a cleaning be sufficient to stop a problem like that?

Mine ('88 5.0) suddenly decided go 45mph with my foot off the gas & at the same time to have no power to the brakes. Turns out the cheap plastic vacuum manifold on the driver's side firewall had broken at the big nipple on the side, creating a 3/8" vacuum leak.

Had a similar problem a long time ago. For some reason the cruise control was revving the car up when I would stop, even though I wasn't using it. PITA, not to mention dangerous. :ies:

sumthin tells me id better keep my eye on you around my shop :flip:

this problem has not happened again so it may have been just a fluke. Im still chasing the bucking in a curve. Im down to inspecting the steering column for a rubbing wire harness.

try just letting the car run while in park or nuetral, and if it starts the bucking and whatnot, firmly tap the IAC with a hammer, sometimes itl help clear up the issue...sometimes

mines an 87 shawn.,, going out for an eve ride now to get some smokes before they close. i think im on to something from what i did today while troubleshooting.
