Ok, new idea.. different friend. lol

This friend suggests going to the junkyard and getting a 85 or older (carbed) 5.0 from a mustang, and the tranny.

He sais it will be pretty simple beacause its carbed.

What all will we need, and what are the advantadges/disadvantages?

Oh yea.. and what suspension modifications are a must?

try to get an 82 up. I think they switched the rear main seals then. Actually get older then 82. Then convert it to roller lifters and get a new cam and heads. It will be as good as new but leak less oil then a newer block.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Good luck finding one of the right year.  I looked for one of those for a long time to try and find the correct Duraspark wiring harness and a few other parts.  That's still a much more simple solution, though.

How about just putting an EFI 302 in there?  You already have the fuel system (aside) from a pump upgrade)..and you will just need the engine(ECU) harness....

Why take a step backwards?  I would not trade my EFI for a carb on any of my cars, and if any were still carb.....they'd be EFI by now.  My old 82 5.0 Mustang and my ex's 83 Tbird 5.0 were both carbed and ran well as well as the 79 turbo Pace Car....but they were a PITA to keep tuned and were never consistent.

Yeah it's appears "easier" up front to just throw a carb on the car and cobble up some ignition and fuel system, but if you do your homework beforehand and know what you're getting into, the EFI will give you better results in the long run..esp for a daily driver......

To get the harness and all I would think the easier lateral swap would be a Mustang, TBird,Cougar, Mk7.  Granted one of the Mustang or Lincoln LSC's would be the "nicer" choice as they would be HO....

Wwwwwwwwwhat?!  Did Chuck just say to put a 302 into a car?! I'm glad I quoted it so now he can't go back on his word!

Getting a carbed engine in an EFI car is actually harder than it seems. Like Chuck said go with EFI 302. Also fuel economy is gonna suck if ya go carbed. Or(I'm gonna sound like Chuck when I say this) you could put a 2.3t in there just to be different. Btw I'm planning on doing this with my Ranger.

Heh.. I was waiting for that.

I knew this wasn't going to be a case of conversion to the "dark side" and going w/ a 2.3T. I kind of figure if someone is looking to do something "easy", and think a carbed 302 is the way to go....I'll just be wasting my time trying to talk 2.3T with them.

However, I do thing reverting to carb from an EFI car (esp for a daily driver) is a HUGE step backwards...., which is more the point I was trying to make.

I suppose if I said keep it EFI all would have been good  :giggle:  If it comes to someone asking my opinion on what engine to choose with no prediliction towards one or the other...then yeah..2.3T all the way :hick:
