Exhaust patch job

I can't afford a new exhaust on my 87 TC so it's time for another patch job! At least I hope...almost all the pipe is rust, but I wanna try to make it lost a few more months-1yr. Here are my thoughts:

Remove the cat entirely (no emissions laws here) and replace it with pipe. should be simple i guess? I know there's a bend so I'll just get some pipe with bends or something to connect it to the ler. Is this change worth it at all? Or should I just go easy way out for now and cupple the pipe together where it broke between the cat and the ler?

Cut off the tailpipe. The pipe broke off the hanger after the ler and it keeps breaking off that weld and the hanger is just shot now. I was thinking about just cutting it completely off and place an angled tip after the ler.

Any suggestions or alternatives are appreciated. Just note the pipe is rusted pretty well in some places.

For $50 you can order the tailpipe and section behind the cat. Another $20 gets you the right ler. Two clamps, all the hangers line up, and it fits under the car like it was made for it.mostly because it is...

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I don't see any point in spending about $70 for a patch job that will only be used a few months, I just need to get rid of the tailpipe all together..a band clamp on the spot where it's broken will suffice for me cuz thats really cheap. What do you think about just taking the tailpipe clear off and getting an angled tip or something else of the like just to remove the tailpipe? The hanger there is pretty much useless at this point.

Tail pipe is gone for good and...not caring about the break. I decided it's bad enough to the point where I think I'm just gonna take it into a shop to get it done as soon as I sell my guitar heehee

Keep your axe, go to autozone and order the exhaust. If its good cat back, you can slip it all together under the car, buy the correct ler and be done with it. If your clamps leak, master ler has welded mine up for $10 a weld. $50-100 would get you a new exhaust you'll not need to worry about leaking.

But its your call.

I've been looking at a more open exhaust, along 3" down to 2.5" after the ler. Worth it? I just wanted a patch so things wouldn't fall off my car as I rebuilt my bank account. Everything from the cat back is leaking and apart.

I would do 3" or bigger turbo back if your looking for any gain. Performance and cheap don't go together well. Do it right the first time, or build it back stock.

Every "patch" job I have done has gotten back to me. if your cats good and bolts on, seriously, order the tail and mid pipe from autoxone. It will cost you about $70 with ler. You could easily spend that on a patch job. If you have rust/holes in one part of you exhaust, you'll find more when you patch it.

Even just hanging the exhaust pipe and getting it welded at a shop will cost you less then half what a shop will do.

I got a quote for my crown vic. $380 for a "catback". Shop told me they had to cut and weld the cats because they were one peice with the h-pipe, and they were "required" to install new cats.

I cut out the last foot of the h-pipe, bought a 2' pipe extension for each side, two chrry bombs, couple of exhaust clamps and a two hangers. For $100 I passed emissions the same day.

My buddies 87 5.0 bird, cat back was rotted out. Threw a new mid and tail on, and a straight through "turbo" style ler. The straight through costs us $14.99, and the pipes were $50. We did need to get the ler welded on, but it cost hime right around $80. Exhaust shop wanted $240.

I've also mikey moused with patches, and they never last any length of time. I had a rottet out ler with a factory exhaust hanger on it. When the ler hanger broke, it swung down into the driveshaft, somehow wrapped around it and ripped out the fuel pump wires. Having no tools on me and being 50 miles from home, I had to take it to a shop to get the exhaust cut off, and managed to get it to autozone and buy some wire and twist the wires together with electrical tape to get it home. Then I had to buy a new tail pipe, mid pipe, exhaust hangers, and catilitic converter. Oh, and on the way home with no exhaust, I got pulled over for no exhaust and had my registration canceled and a $150 fine. I think it ended up costing me about $500 with the ticket, new exhaust, and a tow. Then I had to re-register and tax my car two months after I registered it, doing the patch on the ler.

I talked to a shop and they said $600 for 3" to the ler, a 3" cat, a 40 series flowmaster, and 2.5" single tailpipe :) Waiting for my next paycheck and she's going in to the shop! LOUD car now that my ler fell off...

Okay, I decided I'm just going to go new pipe cat back from a local shop. The downpipe to the cat is in good shape and I figure all of it would last 5 years and at that point I will hopefully have started a career and could afford to restore my car n stuff. If I recall, the diameter of the exit of the cat is 2" (correct me if not)..I was thinking have them just weld up all new pipe and a ler past that all the same size as the cat. Yay/nay?

I took everything our from the lers back. Just left a short tube to direct the exhaust flow down just in front the rear axle. The cat converter went the way of the s yard last year. Just put a straight pipe thru to the lers.
