My ball joint came apart like that and I too could hear sing just like you described. Luckly mine finally came completly apart while turning at low speed in a parking lot. I would not have wanted that to have happened while running down the road at 70.

Yeah, I do.  I do a lot of my own work on the car, so I can check stuff out (I just replaced both axle half shafts on my wife's 2003 VW Passat).  Just not sure I'm equipped to do suspension work (no air tools for one thing).  I need to check the Haynes manual and see what they say for ball joint replacement...I know the parts aren't expensive.  I have an appointment to bring it in tomorrow, but if the job looks very do-able, I might cancel and work on it this weekend.  Any repair pointers are appreciated!

I have never done one on one of these cars, but you usually need a press to get them in.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Yeah, I was thinking it would require tools beyond the garage mechanic...and an alignment after anyway, correct?  So, I figured, probably just bite the bullet and bring it in...

Use the jack on the A frame ,take the wheel off the ground, check for play. If no play, jack it on the frame and check for play. Could have some bad A frame bushings. It's an old car.
The spring probably is bad on the left, normal on these cars, you don't see it till it's out.

Well, took it in for repair last Friday and (obviously) both ball joints were bad.  Kinda pricey to have done, but car sits level now and I would say the front end is "tighter".  Springs seem fine, so I think I'm good on suspension for the near future!  Thx for the replies :)
