proper use of carb cleaner

I think it was you thunderchicken who pointed out the proper way to use carb cleaner. Its suppose to be used while the engine is running.

im wanting to use a can on my wifes bronco,,351w and would it be correct to do the following.

i found a vac line going to the upper intake up near the Dual Trottle body
i want to install a tee fitting and reconnect the vac line.
i would like to spray the carb cleaner in the tee fitting while running

would this be the correct way to do this?
should the engine be bone cold when i do this or hot?
would this be ok since its going to circulate through the pvc/intake system?

sorry for the wierd question but i had no idea there was a right and wrong way to use this stuff till someone asked it a month or so ago.

Isn't there something written about using seafoam for that sort of thing? I'm sure carb cleaner would work, but I always thought you were supposed to use seafoam.

Usually if i have to spray Carb Cleaner, i remove the air tube, open the trottle body and spray half the can everywhere inside....
Then i start the engine and spray the rest while running...

If you do it my way, Dont ask someone you love to stand behind the exhautst when you will start it..... :giggle:

IMHO, if you only spray while running, you only vaporising it (mixing with air) before it get in contact with anything instead to do the job....

Another important thing : depending on the type of carb / throttle body cleaner; is to drive the vehical for 15-20 miles after spraying it in. Just follow the directions on the can.

The way i've done it on the 351W in our F250 is pull the hoses off the throttle body and spray down everything pretty good, then fire it up and spray some more till everything sparkles

then reattatch everything and take it for a drive. Add seafoam/injector cleaner/ATF or whatever you use at the same time, it wouldnt hurt to change your fuel filter after a tank or so of gas aswell. Thats what I did after out truck sat for 7 years and she fired right up and ran like a ford truck does
