Debating.

I have a friend who works at the gym that I go to who has an '88 TC. He's not interested in the car much, and he said he'd sell it to me for 1500 with the current mods (blow off valve, upgraded front mount intercooler) or for 1000 with the original stock parts. The car has 200K+ miles on it, but he said it runs great. I've seen it too, raced him once and seen him driving it around campus. So I know it runs. It's a five speed, and I'm pretty sure it has 3.73's. He says the only real problem has is the VAM (not entirely sure what that is) and it has no air conditioning. All I really want it for is a parts car for now (I'd like to have a v-8 in my car in a few years), but it would be cool to drive it sometimes. My debate is this...

I don't have 1000 straight up, but since I know the guy and see him regularly, I'm wondering if he'll take payments. If so, that's great, but it depends on how low he'll take for payments. I'm thinking if I can swing 100 here and there, I can have it paid in a year, give or take a few months. Should I even bother with a car with that many miles on it? Like I said, I know it runs well, but yeah...Then I have the issue of storing it, registering it, etc(it's 500ish to register in the state of FL). Another issue, I really have no place to keep the car. I called some storage places around my apartment to store it, and they want a minimum of 180 a month. The garages in my apartment complex are 75 a month, but idk if I can swing that yet either...

I graduate in spring of 2012. I think he graduates this spring, so there's no telling if he'll be here after then.

Ideas?

I wouldn't do the payments.  What if this guy has $700-$800 of your money and something happens ( car gets stolen, car gets damaged, car breaks down, car gets wrecked, dude gets pissed at you for something and keeps your money ).  Think about it if the car breaks or gets damaged in the next 6 months you might change your mind and want the money back, and the same way you paid is how he spent it so he doesn't have it to return to you.  I got burned once before for $700 so maybe its me.

If it was me and I figured 1 year +/- to get the grand I would take a pass. You could always save the grand in a year and use it on the car you already have. Atleast then you arent registering another car and finding storage. Now that being said, since it isnt me its easy to say, as I know me and I would buy it cuz I have a disease for these things.

If all you really want it for is a parts car, I'd just as soon you pass on it. If it's in decent shape, maybe someone who want's an actual TC will get the chance to pick it up.

I had done this with a friend of mine, we aren't "best buds" but we're good friends. We agreed on a price of 800 for my '86. He wasn't working at the time, but got money every month for back child support, in which we made out a payment plan over 4 months (he also paid me 400 upfront). It worked out great for us, he paid his last payment last month. It all depends on how responsible you guys are (I'm not saying that either of you aren't) and how much you trust each other to do the right thing. Honestly, IMHO, if you don't really need the car, it's not worth the hassle, with you being in school and having no place to put it. In reality, it dosen't matter what anybody says, it's what you want to do that counts. Good luck

I paid 450 bucks for my Sport....it wasn't pretty.

I'm sure a Florida TC will be nicer....don't part it.
I agree with jangus...hell, for 1500 bucks, you can buy a lot of parts cars that aren't fit to drive or fix...

Best post. If you are gonna take a year to pay off a thousand dollars maybe your priorities should be elsewhere. Spending every cent you (don't) have on this car will leave you with no money left to actually do anything with it.

OK, lets think about this.

You have no place to store the car
You dont have the money to register the car
You must make payments for about a year
You mainly want it for a parts car

Im all about people saving and enjoying these cars, but this decision sounds like it should be passed on.

Save that money and purchase one when you have the funds, or use that money on your current car for mods or fix up.

Thanks for the feedback everybody.

I'm not going to get the car, not now anyways. The only reason I really entertained the idea was because it would be the first time I've ever owned something somewhat fast. I'm thirsty for speed, and my 3.8 Thunderbird and my 4.0 OHV Explorer aren't cutting it. But I'll just have to be patient.

If I didn't need the Explorer I wouldn't have it, but it's a good family car for my daughter, me, and my fiance. Plus my parents bought the Explorer for me after my first year of college, so I'd feel kinda like a dick if I sold it without giving them the money....
