People w/ explorer motor and AOD..????

Well have to swap motors again,,,:mad: Motor I bought and put in sons car turned out to be no good. Ran good for about 3 days and now have coolant coming out exhaust. Dont have time to rebuild so got lucky and found a 96 explorer motor that was just pulled. So now car is getting explorer motor.

Since I have to pull motor again, I am pulling tranny and having it freshened up w/ new converter.  I am leaving the explorer cam in since its made for torque, and going to use 1.6 roller rockers, but may swap to 1.7's later.

Anyway, question is for people that used the explorer motor w/cam..  Trying to decide if I should run a converter with stall speed of the explorer, or will stock stall of a mustang, since it is an HO swap?? Not looking for anything real hot-rodish,, but want a combo to be matched and work well as daily driver... BTW,, car will be getting a Tubro Coupe 8.8 w/73's eventually. Already have 8.8 but havent installed it..

You already have the explorer motor cam in your car. It uses the same truck roller cam as your cougar/bird. Upgrade to the H.O. cam at least. You don't need to worry about torque in a car with a 5.0 liter v-8. If it makes torque up high, then it still makes torque. I would run at least 2000rpm stall or higher.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I'm using a Mountaineer engine...same thing,except mine is of the "P" variety.I'd swap cams and valve springs for sure.A stock Mustang H.O cam,and  new valve springs will make you happy,give nice performance,get decent mpg,and be easy to do.

I do have mustang HO cam, but was leaning toward the explorer cam,, so I dont have to pull intake off.  But if the stock HO cam is that much better, then I will swap it in, and just run a stock mustang converter with tranny rebuild.

The H.O cam is better.Pulling the intake with the motor out is a piece of cake,plus,new gaskets can't hurt anything.You'll have to swap the timing cover,distributor,oil pan and pickup,lower intake metal water lines,ad a few other little things,so,what';s the big deal about an intake?LOL.

Pretty hard to beat an HO cam, and as Vinnie said, a lot of the stuff on the front will need to be changed anyway. ;)

I'd go with a 2400 stall lockup converter as well...

That work well with stock HO cam??  I havent messed with stock HO stuff in so long, and plus never messed with stock AOD stuff. Most of the stang Ive had were 5 speeds, and last 2 I had Art Carr AOD's with 3000-3200 stall. But also they were behind blown stroker combo's.

This car wont be going to track anytime soon. Might take my son drag racing after he gets some driving under his belt. He doesn't take the test for his driver license until July 23rd...  And I think once he gets his freedom with having a car, then we will start modifying it.

Its hard for me not to go crazy with this thing, right now. Since I sold my 93 Summer Edition droptop, I am fee-ning for a hot-rod to build.

Can see it here + few other stangs I've built--->  http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3346805

If it's just a daily driver, there's no need for more than a stock convertor, which will typically flash around 1800rpm.  I'd stick with the explorer cam for now...contrary to popular opinion it's not the same as the "truck cam" that was originally in these '87-'88's.  It's a good cam and will make peak power around 4200 with GTP heads and 4700rpm with GT40 irons- which the '96 has.

If it's being built as a fun weekend/strip car, then yes, convertor and cam...but with those stock parts, you'll get better fuel economy and still make more than HO power.

It's all about the overall combination....just like you wouldn't wear a pair of tube socks to go swimming.

Good luck,
Don

As others have said, no need to get wild on your son's ride for now. However, if you want to get a good overview of info on cam swapping and stuff related to the Explorer/GT40P engine, you and others on the forum might be interested in my 5.0L swap dvd series. It's got lots of details on swapping in a 5.0L into a Fox TBird however, scenes devoted to cam design, geometry, piston to valve checks, troubleshooting EEC problems, making you own EEC/pump relay box etc. are all in this package. I see questions about these subjects on this and other forums all the time which I address in the film. See the badshoe vender ad below for my member discount if anyone is interesed. I have to go along with the GT cam if you were going to change it and keep SD electronics if that's what you have. I used a Crane 2020 in my project which works with SD but it's close to the edge. Good luck on the project.

"The F4TE cam is 256/266, the HO is either 276/276 or 276/266

96-01 Explorer 5.0L "HO" roller
Ford Part numbers: F4TE-6250-BA

* Duration at .050 in.: 186 / 197
* Gross valve lift: 0.422 / 0.448
* Lobe separation: 116°

I found this on the fullsizebronco.com forum. How accurate it is I can't say, but it's in between the low-output 302 Crown Vic/T-bird cam and the HO Mustang cam, although it's a good bit closer to the low-output unit."

"I was trying to get the full spec (card) on the HO roller cams from the 5.0l, so I can run them in Desktop dyno.

So far, I've found the lift to be .444/.444, 204/204 at .050" lift, 116 lsa.

I was looking specifically for intake and exhaust valve opening and closing timing events. Anyone know?

The cam I have now is a stock 86 HO roller.

Thanks!!"

So basically, it is not the truck/cougarbird camshaft, its the 351 version of the same camshaft. Wonder why they also put it in 351's, hence the 351 firing order. That is probably why everyone says that the motor falls flat on its face at 4,000rpm's.
