87 Turbo Coupe Hood and Engine ???

I happen to get my hands on an original Tubro Coupe Hood (but it needs some TLC) to rock on my 87 Cougar.  My question is...what kind of engine mods would be necessary to actually make it functional and not have to plug the holes?

You can use the hood, just leave the scoops in. Some might say that if you have a V8, the driver's scoop will lightly touch the AC bracket. I dunno, mine was cut off when I bought my engine.

As for functionality, unless you just want to be different, it'd probably be easier to just get a Mustang CAI (cold air induction).

Good luck!

Thanks for the input on the CAI

The reason i was questioning the need to plug was in reference to the "Aftermarket Hood" article in the "Modifying" page on CoolCats.net

I do have a 5.0 V8 but considered removing the scoops and putting them on the outside of the hood.  So far its just been a thought, but I haven't looked at it to close yet.

Most popular is a 1987-88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe hood, which bolts right up to your Cougar. Obviously the scoops are no longer functional on a V6 or V8 car, and in fact should be capped to prevent water from leaking onto your distributor. Also, on SEFI 5.0 cars the a/c bracket must be shaved down so that the driver's scoop will clear. There may be minor clearance issues with other engines but nothing extremely difficult to deal with. With the availablility of these hoods, and the comfort of knowing that it's a factory Ford part, this is a very tempting proposition. Pricing is very erratic, however, so shop wisely.

I made block-off plates for mine that bolt in,and can be removed easily because every time it would rain, water would get everywhere under the hood and I couldn't keep everything clean.Leaves were also bad.. I also have a 5.0 in my car. With the relation of the scoops to the distributor, etc,I just don't think you could make the scoops functional. As stated above,a CAI kit would be better, but, the factory air box is already a CAI,just remove the silencer from the inner fender.

X2 on the silencer removal. When I wrecked my car I pulled it off with the crumpled fender. Doubt it actually improved performance, but it sounds alittle bit more like a v-8. Also, I ran a TC hood on my old 86 cougar with a 5.0. There was enough clearance, but with my bad motor mounts, I eventually popped out the drivers side scoop. I could see some water getting on the dist, but I never had a problem.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
