It seems pretty common to replace the 2.3T with a 5.0.  I went the other way though.  My car was originally a 5.0 and I took that out and put the 2.3T in.

Are you happy with it? How tough are the transmissions in the 2.3t? I know a lot of turbo cars stock trannys usually don't hold up especially 5speeds is it any different for these?

Well I actually haven't gotten to drive it with its new drive train yet.  My wife got stationed out here in Las Vegas just as I was finishing up the swap and the car has been stuck at our house in Kansas for the last 3 years.  I finally have the money saved up to ship it though, so I should be able to report back on how thrilled I am with it soon.  I pretty much built mine out of parts I had laying around to go as fast as possible for as cheap as possible, so that is why I went with the 2.3T

The A4LD auto tranny in the 87-88 models is pretty weak, but the T5 manual is pretty decently strong.  My car has a C3 (A4LD without overdrive) and should hold up ok, but I plan to swap a T5 in when it breaks.  You can check out my build thread here  http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=27461

Also be sure to check out the forums at Turboford  (http://www.turboford.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php)  and at NATO  (http://natomessageboard.com/cgi-bin/Ultimatebb.cgi)

Man I would love to see the LS swap in a fox bird I myself have given it serious thought

Yup, there's a few guys who've done or are doing the 4.6 swap.

Shame302 was in the process..I think he got away from it...32vFoxBird did or was doing it. There's also ppl who've dropped in 351w, 429, 460, and even a case of a Caddy 500 incher!

Basically, if it'll fit, it can be used. Myself..I'm waiting for the day one of us here drops in an LS Chevy engine

We all know how potent those mean little s are lol

Well a 1jz-gte or 2jz-gte or even a 4g63t would be an awesome swap also. GM LSx motors are awesome motors, I have a buddy with a LS3 FD rx7. So which of you guys are going to do it?

I'd save the LS2 swap for the XJS.

5.0L's will give you big torque for little $$.  Parts are cheap on craigslist and such because people are moving on to the mod motors.

Welcome to the site.
My 88TC daily driver will stay 2.3T. I just like the car too much to modify it. As far as being high maintenance and finicky, that's . Granted, I change the oil more frequently, but since when does that qualify as high maintanence? Takes no more trouble to keep in tune and running that a fuel injected 5.0.
That being said, my next project that I'm collecting parts for is an 87TC that will be twin turboed injected 5.0 with a T5. Before anyone starts crying, the TC washiznit pretty hard in the drivers door and left in a field with no window in it for 6 years. Either I turn it into a drag car or it goes to the sper. I prefer to save it.
88 TC 5speed, 168000+ miles, stock 2.3T long block, ported RFE6 exhaust, Evergreen T3 running 15#'s.
Up next: FMIC, fresh air intake, ported intakes, ported big valve head.

If you need help with the 5.0 TT build let me know. A buddy of mine named Ramney has a grabber orange 900+ horsepower  5.0tt 91 notch. It is fully street legal and still has most of the modern conviences that aren't usually  seen in such a built car. He is excellent with tuning.

I just got 30 mpg on a 360 mile highway trip in my 182,000 mile turbo coupe. The car has run 14.7's. Not fast but not slow either. Its almost stock.

Fordguy545 has dyno'd close to 350whp and 400wtq with a stock bottom end. The car is a riot to ride along at the autocrosses. This is what he's doing now http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=27401

A 1jz-who? or a 2jz-what? I must be old, because none of that made any sense to me! LOL

Personally, I am planning a Duratec 2.3 swap, keeping it turbocharged of course. I really rather a modern I6, but Ford doesn't have any DOHC Is engines in the states, only in Australia.
