bolt on pipes

Hey everyone. sorry i've been out for a bit. had a family emergency over seas.

Im thinking about trying to get an exhaust set up for the cougar but was unsure of if somethigns may bolt up right.

I am interested in either an H pipe or X pipe, and was wondering how well a catted bolt on system from a mustang would go with the cougar. or would my best sure bet be to just have a shop bend me some pipes?  Im interested in getting some flowmasters or SLP's but not sure yet if i want a X or H pipe.  any suggestions?

Thanks guys.

h and x pipes from stangs bolt right up, the mid tubes and tail pipes have to be lengthened(maybe just the tails on the birds and cougars) SLP sounds KILLER with a catted h, and catted x, dont go with O/R and SLP unless you like INSANE loud.

I have (Stang parts) BBK shorty headers,Pypes off road X-Pipe,lengthened mid pipes (it's a must, our cars are longer in the middle),40 series Flowmasters, and mandrel bent 2 1/2 inch Stang tail pipes (also lengthened, our cars are longer out back as well). All easy to install, and the lengthening of the pipes is simple work to any quality ler shop.

thats great a catted x will sound good.  I want it to be a loud agressive roar when i gun it, but i want it to have a nice agressive tone at normal driving speeds so i can still have a conversation in the car.

alot of the guys at foxbodyforum have been helpful aswell. I was just wondeirng if the Mustang specified X and H pipes will bolt righ tup to my cougar.

question is now. which is prefered cat back X pipes or H pipes?

would it be better to order the mustang pipes or just have a shop bend me a x or h pipe and install the SLP's

I was also thinking of adding tips just to clean up the rear.

anyone have a video of a catted set up? all the vids i find on youtube are newer model mustangs, or modified mustangs that have O/R set ups.

birthday is next month so im trying to find a good SLP loudmouth setup for the cougar.

just buy the slp lers and ahve the cat back bent up
x pipes sound raspyer and sound good, but im old school i like h pipes more, but x pipes generally build more power

My car has an advantage,it's now a 5 speed,so,no clearance issues. With an automatic tranny, column shifted, you'll need to watch the linkage, and may have to adjust it a little to make sure it doesn't touch the pipes (you'll need either factory Mustang,or aftermarket headers with the X or H pipe),If you have a floor shifter (or column),you may need to make a small dent in the X or H pie so that the actual linkage on the tranny itself doesn't touch the pipe.I had to do that when I had the AOD.It was about a 1/4 inch deep and about the size of a half dollar coin.Insignificant yet functional. With the 5 speed, tons of room. It's nothing that should sway your decision you in any way at all.

ya i know alot of people said they prefer the H pipe because it gives the old muscle sound.  I like the deep tone but i would also like a loud agressive roar to scare children :P

having the shop bend me an X pipe should be cheaper aswell right?

lol im not the best but you kinda lost me on the linkage part. i know what it is. but just figured (hey its a exhaust set up after the cats so should be no problem)

if the exhaust shop guys know what they're doin they should be able to do everything with no problems correct?

so if i request a catted system the shop should be able to do everything correctly without setting off any sensors or anything right?

found a decent vid of a SLP catted X. sounds reall nice and still sounds loud at just 3-4000 RPMS

the first time i went the guy offered me a set up for about $300.00 but said he wouldnt touch the cats (law issue( though i dunno why. lol arkansas has no emissions test.
not sure what the average price is for a shop to bend some x or H pipes but the guy who owns the shop went to school with my cousin about 8 years ago. so i guess he offered a discount.

BUY the x or H pipe it will be the cheapest way to go, if you want no cats, they are DIRT cheap, catted ones cost alot mroe but are worth it cause they are high flow cats.
BUY the lers then have the cat back custom bent with those lers. Then add your tips. Thats THE BEST way to do it, period

You'd be better off getting headers, and an aftermarket X or H pipe. You can buy a Mustang kit and just lengthen where it's needed.Simple stuff.Plus,if you buy aftermarket, they have the bungs for the )2 sensors, ball and socket s for removal if necessary, and generally great quality. My X-Pipe is a two piece part, and all I have to do to drop the 5 speed is remove the driver side short pipe from the header to X-Pipe (takes about 3 minutes).Don't get in hurry.Take your time and use good parts.

Here's the one I have.....

Stock Mustang headers are super dirt cheap as well and are fine for mild performance engines.
