heater switch

hey guys im having yet another problem with my 85, the heater only works  when the control switch is on high?? is it the switch or something alts?

im going to the junkyard later to day to get some parts what would i need to fix it?

save your gas, easy fix

find a piece of wire 24awg or smaller and about 1'' long
**Cat5 wire in some cases is already solder tinned and would be a better choice since it will prevent a cold solder joint in case you do not have solder flux.
remove the speed control device pointed out below.
>open glove box and empty it
>undo the plastic side support cable do hicky and let glove box fall open
>you might have to remove the glove completely by way of the screws along its hinge as well as the cross brace to get in there better.
>locate speed control resistor bank plug on the left area of air box held by two screws and unplug it
>remove sensor and you will see three coils and another item on the part.
>there is a  round pointed at one end silver looking device about 1/4'' long which is a thermal fuse which opens if excessive current is drawn.
>with an alligator clip jumper wire, clip on either end of the thermal fuse, test your fan speeds, if all settings work then move forward.  If you dont have a gator clip jumper wire, a plastic coated paper clip can be shaped and touched on either end of the defective fuse to test your fan speeds.  (everybody has colored paper clips  : ) ,, just something to bypass the fuse for a moment.  You could even use needle nose pliers to either end of the fuse to bypass the fuse.
>Turn off your fan and remove your car keys. Use your small jumper 24awg wire and insert it in place of the fuse by cutting out the fuse.  This type of wire can easily be found such as the type the phone company brings to your NID outside.  This wire is a little thicker than i would agree with, again smaller may be better in all our cases when we do this repair as to enable the wire to burn open again in case you do have another problem.
You simply attach the small jumper to where the fuse was and reheat up the existing solder which will attach to your new jumper.
>plug your repaired part back in and test your fan speeds and let it run for a while, the wire coils get very friggin hot so be careful.
>Fix the root cause for the fuse blowing by cleaning out the squirrel cage in the fan housing.
>remove screws holding fan in place below air box,drop fan out, clean the fan with air, or with a clean paint brush ect.

you should be good to go for another 20 years.

OR***** perhaps the motor brushes are too warn out and you decide to ignore the above by using a large wire and your car burns to the ground.  AGAIN,,,,,,,the smaller wire the better.

A good modification would be to solder in a circuit breaker fuse like the ones in your fuse box for power seats.
