Illuminated Entry to Keyless Remote Add-On September 07, 2009, 12:16:17 AM My latest 86 has the "light group" option, including cornering lamps, lighted key slots, lighted entry. I searched, and didn't find where anyone had done this conversion, but I want to add keyless remote entry. I don't care about remote start, because it really doesn't get that cold in Alabama. It gets hot, but nothing putting both windows down for a few minutes won't solve at 40 mph. However, I am spoiled by keyless entry. I like not having key scratches around the lock, and having the door unlocked when I get to it, and that "beep-beep" to tell me I did lock my doors when I walk away from it. The car has power everything, 6-way driver's seat, mirrors, windows and locks. Believe it or not, even the seat-belt wire is still intact, and the seatbelt light actually works. With the lighted entry, I'm sure the module in the trunk on the rear seat bracing has a whole lot to do with the lighting. Are the locks also routed through this module, and if so, can I get to everything I need to at that module to convert the locks to remote keyless? Don't have and don't want the key pads. I've got enough passwords to remember in my life. I just want to look into the conversion, and see if I can develop a good gameplan before I shell out the expense for something that isn't going to work without butchering the OE harnesses. I want the least invasive approach on the wiring possible, and will even consider some t-connections to prevent ugly splices. I can get connectors and have crimping tools, so those are not an issue. Do I just need to trigger some inputs on the module in the trunk to unlock the doors and turn on the interior lights? Do the power locks actually go through that module with only lighted entry? Hope you got the diagrams I need jcassity. (grin) Ultimately, I'd like to do this to both birds, but the blue one only has power windows and mirrors. No power locks, however, the wiring is there for them. This is something I'd like to do before I get either painted, just to prevent scratches from keys. Sometimes I have stuff in my hands, and just pushing a button is a whole lot easier than reaching down to get a key in the door and turn it. I may even add it to my F-150 which also has power locks/windows, and put them all on one code so that one fob opens any car door I want to get in. Quote Selected
Illuminated Entry to Keyless Remote Add-On Reply #1 – September 07, 2009, 09:09:45 AM Your only option is an aftermarket alarm system to do all the functions you want. The factory keyless systems will not interface with your car. Quote Selected
Illuminated Entry to Keyless Remote Add-On Reply #2 – September 07, 2009, 10:56:04 AM I was more or less counting on an aftermarket module. I'd just like a little more info on tieing it in before I spend the bucks, just to try to figure out how much effort and time I'm going to have to put in it to keep from turning my wiring harness into a rat's nest. Illuminated Entry to Keyless Remote Add-On Reply #3 – September 07, 2009, 11:03:14 AM Quote from: dominator;290220The factory keyless systems will not interface with your car.Not so... :shakeheadI have a factory Remote system from a '98 Taurus on my TC that only has lighted entry... Made all the connections in the glove box area, module is mounted on A/C plenum... The relays are mounted above the glove box, where the systems monitor module once resided(a candy, piss ass nanny I never looked at, the monitor panel was out anyway, replaced by gauges)... Probably could use the Keyless module to directly operate the Bird relays but since I had them, used the Taurus relays to operate the Bird's relays... Anyway mine will lock/unlock the doors(both at once), pop the trunk and operate the panic mode... It does not operate the interior or exterior lighting(probably could operate at least the interior, I just never explored this option)... Additionally it will open my garage door, as the passenger door unlock(2nd push of the unlock button) operates a GDO transmitter... This feature only works if the car is in the garage, as the GDO transmitter doesn't have much range being buried in the dash...The modules to get are the ones from approx '00-up and as far as I can determine, are all same at least to '04... The Taurus and a few other models first went to this system in '98, then was phased in over the next couple of years... The ones from a Escort are prime candidates, as they have far less interface with the other systems, so have less wires in the plugs to deal with... Quote Selected
Illuminated Entry to Keyless Remote Add-On Reply #4 – September 07, 2009, 07:06:43 PM Check out my restoration page. I just added a bunch of info there about my install. I just added an Audiovox aftermarket keyless entry. It was advertised as a reconditioned unit for $29.00 with free shipping off eBay. I am very happy with the results. The features include lock/unlock with illuminated entry with a 30 second timeout, parking/taillamp flash and horn chirp (programmable on-off), starter interupt, panic button with horn activation, trunk release. Be estra careful to find an aftermarket unit that has the trunk release. I almost fell for a sale that did not have a provision for it. The module is very small and unobtrusive, easyto hide under the dash. I was able to make my connections for the parking lamp/taillamp flash with the brown wire in the wiring harness down behind the driver's side kick panel. Using that brown wire, it will also flash your instrument panel lights with the exterior lights. You will also find there two pink wires, one with a stripe that controls the lock/unlock relay. If you have courtesy lamps under the dash, you just tap off the one under the driver's knee panel. I had to add two relays because the alarm module uses negative pulses. One relay was needed for the 30 second illumination after unlock, the other relay was needed to provide 12+ to open the trunk. For the trunk release I tapped into the pink wire on the back of the trunk release switch in the glovebox. I will take some pictures of the installed unit and location of the wires. Check it out later in my thread. I have not installed the starter interupt relay yet. I will add it later. The unit works virtually identical to the factory system in my 08 Mustang. Quote Selected
Illuminated Entry to Keyless Remote Add-On Reply #5 – September 07, 2009, 07:09:38 PM Really, factory keyless entry systems can be done like that????I've always heard it would be an absolute nightmare.Would an aftermarket alarm system not serve the same purpose and have a detailed wiring diagram???I have an ungo 5000 in my tc that does all that and more. We still have the original remotes for the '93 Grand Marquis that work fine...I actually converted some garage door opener receivers to operate the doors prior to going with the factory stuff(this was '02 BTW)... Required one for lock and another for unlock... Since those remotes only have three buttons, I couldn't operate anything else if I wanted to be able to open the GDO... Bought the Taurus module and relays from ebay and had at it... I'll say this, was a Hell of a lot easier than converting to a 5.0... Done some minor research since I installed mine and the Escort stuff seems the way to go... I have one of those modules and it works exactly the same as the Taurus unit... Also have a module for a '04 something(it's new in box), also works same as the others... Quote Selected
