The converter ain't likely your problem... If the inner shaft is broken that splines into the front hub of the converter(been there done that with the Super Coupe tranny in the Bird... Ever drive one 93miles in 2nd gear???), it will shift to 2nd and after that just free wheel... Also does same if direct clutch is burned up...

Assuming it doesn't have a mechanical failure, I'd guess you probably have a valve body or governor problem...

ok so changing the valve body and adding a shift kit should solve my shifting problems....

So I should ask where is the best place to buy a valve body for this transmission?  And which company makes the most reliable shift kit for my application?

Your guess is as good as mine as to whether a VB will fix it...

Jegs has a modified VB for the AOD for $195(last time I checked), shift kit already installed...

one other question, I've read all over the internet that the internals excluding the VB can be switched into the AOD from the AODE do you know how hard of a task that might be and what may be needed to complete such a job?  I drove the truck this morning and it shifted out fine until I had to come to a stop and start again which was 6 miles down the road.  Any suggestions there? This is why I was leaning towards the VB switch and possible shift kit... Art Car has the VB for $75...
