Anyone done a 460 FI swap?

I have seen alot of thunderbirds that have done a 460/c-6 swap and used carb. I was looking at a 460 in a F-250 for an hour today going.....hmmmmmm. The twin throttle body with seperate intake tubes to the fenders, serp belt setup, cowl hood for the t-bird and even use the E4OD to make it a cruiser car. I know there is a guy that can reflash 5.0L computers to use with 460's but you have to use a Bauman trans controller for the E4OD. But I want to see if anyone has gone to the lengths of this kind of swap. Pisc too if you have them.

Thanks
Shane

Thatd be neat. With the FI and OD it would be a bit more streetable (gas wise) than carb and c6. Might see 18mpg instead of 12.

Then find room for a pair of holsets.

My dad's e250 throws no codes and averages about 13 mpg. I doubt there is anyway to get better mileage out of it without an engine swap. His old van had a carbed 460 and got 12 mpg. Other then a rebuild, I don't think it would be worth it to try to keep the FI. Just my .02

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Take that e250 and drop about 2000lbs off it, 2/3rds of the frontal area, .20 off the drag coefficient, re-gear it for a lighter car, and you will probably pick up a few mpg. Theres more to gas mileage than the engine :P

you should be able to get decent mileage considering i know a guy with a 55 chevy that has a dual quad tunnel ram on a 454 and he gets 18 mpg.

There ya go... A Bird with a 460 ain't going to be exactly frugal, but with the correct gearing, I suspect 18-20mpg would be possible running a steady 60-65 mph...

Now that said, I've seen a stock 460 in a trunk Stang that only ran 13.5s, my Bird will better that(of course I have prob $3000 in a 5.0)...

Well don't forget that if you get the 5.0L pcm set up to run a 460 SEFI instead of batch fire, you will get better milage. I met a guy on a Cobra kit car site that does that, reprogramming of pcm's to work with the 460's. I know that it is hard to fit that under the hood but a friend at work is doing a 84 Cougar with a single 88mm turbo 460 and it all fits under the hood. But he is running 3 fuel pumps and major tune on dyno's. Not really a street cruising kind of car.http://www.performance-shop.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=38741.0 Check it out.

Oh yeah. I guess you have to sign in. Sorry guys. Actually I talked with him at work today and it seems he is having a fuel issue. When he hits arround 4000 rpm the fuel pressure just drops off to 25 psi. He is running 3 pumps so now it is time to start digging and see where the problem lies.

Sounds like it's time to ditch that multiple fuel pump abortion and pick up an Aeromotive pump.  For something like that, you're not going to be able to go very cheap for a reliable fuel system capable of what he needs.

Good luck,
Don

Well it seems the pump suck awesome. So awesome that the pickup was actually going against the bottom of the tank and causing a block. Fixed that with a little tpuppies and wow.... its fast.
