Partial HO Swap - Runs Too Rich April 07, 2005, 05:28:52 PM My car is running extremely rich, so much so that sometimes I cannot start the car. When I can get it started there is a light black smoke coming from the tail pipes and the throttle must be raised slowly to achieve any rpm but idle. The car is currently un-driveable. I did a head swap on this car and prior to that all of my sensors were working and the car was running great.I have checked ignition timing, air temp sensor, new oxygen sensors, TPS is within range, IAC is 6-months old, 40psi fuel pressure (stock fuel system). How can I check my map sensor on a speed denstiy car? What would cause the injectors to fire/stay open so long that I can get the car to start? Quote Selected
Re: Partial HO Swap - Runs Too Rich Reply #1 – April 07, 2005, 06:22:22 PM Sounds like you got a vacuum leak to the MAP sensor that is causing it to think you're running lean and therefore it richens the mixture up. Check all your vacuum lines to make sure there are no holes/pinches/cracks in them. Quote Selected
Re: Partial HO Swap - Runs Too Rich Reply #2 – April 07, 2005, 06:41:13 PM I ran a new line to the map sensor once I found out that it played a role in fuel mixture but that didn't make a change. Quote Selected
Re: Partial HO Swap - Runs Too Rich Reply #3 – April 07, 2005, 06:46:06 PM 40psi on fuel pressure at idle is way to much for a stock vehicle, check to see if your regulator is bad or if there is a vaccum leak at the regulator line Quote Selected
Re: Partial HO Swap - Runs Too Rich Reply #4 – April 07, 2005, 06:49:20 PM To answer your question on checking the map sensor, install a hand style vaccum pump (like a mityvac) on the sensor and give it about 15" of vaccum Quote Selected
Re: Partial HO Swap - Runs Too Rich Reply #5 – April 08, 2005, 08:42:42 AM Quote40psi on fuel pressure at idle is way to much for a stock vehicleIf he's taking that reading with the vacuum line off then that is the correct pressure. That would be high with the line on and then your regulator would have a possibility of being bad or there is a leak in the line Quote Selected
